Mickey D's, et al, to gobble up most of relief bill

by Robin Garr » Sun Mar 29, 2020 3:47 pm

Quick work by Mitch McConnell and Marco Rubio snatches billions meant for small, locally owned eateries. There's still time to yell at your representatives in the house, though.

Mother Jones wrote:An earlier version of the legislation had reserved the whole pot for independently owned small businesses, but Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) slid in the provision allowing restaurant and hotel chains could qualify. So a pot of money that was supposed to support more than 30 million small businesses and their nearly 60 million employees—which, by the way, is almost half of the entire US workforce—will now be split with companies like McDonalds, which took in a record $100 billion in sales and returned more than $8 billion to shareholders through stock buybacks and dividends last year.

PS: Yeah, left-leaning source. The story is solid, though.

I believe most (if not all) louisville McDonalds are local franchises, not corporate owned. There is supposed to be wording in the bill that money goes only to workers, not management or buy-backs.

Just saying that this is shades of gray, not simple black and white!

I agree, I think most of the local McD's are franchised although a few of them are corporate. Another thing in the bill that was passed by Congress is at the loans cannot go to businesses that can get a loan thru conventional means. Most of the major corporations should be able to do that without a problem.
