2 more Cajun seafood restaurants

by Rich S » Mon Mar 02, 2020 12:07 pm

According to Food & Dining’s website, this area will be getting two more Cajun seafood/boiled seafood restaurants, in Shelbyville Road Plaza, next to the post office, and at Middletown Station shopping center. Apparently they will be called Million’s Crab Boiled Seafood, although some of the Louisville planning records list their name as “Juicy Seafood.” Both locations show up on the website of Million’s Crab, which is a new, small chain.

Million’s Crab is similar to Storming Crab in Clarksville, and also to Pier 17 Cajun Seafood on Hurstbourne Parkway, which seems to be on the verge of opening (they finally took down the paper covering the windows, so you can see the nautical decor).

Says Cajun, but menu has the overall look of an Asian seafood place with all photos, descriptions in English and Chinese, and Szechuan spiced as an up-charged alternative to Cajun!

I’ve been to Vietnamese-Cajun places before, and really liked them. Szechuan-Cajun sounds fun!

I was just reading that also and found it somewhat strange. I've never seen a Chinese Cajun before! The pictures on their website of menu items also look more Oriental than they do Cajun. We certainly could use some more seafood restaurants but I hope they are straight Cajun Seafood instead of seafood with a Oriental overlay.

Yep, big all along the Gulf Coast, where tons of Vietnamese fishers settled after the war. Cajun-Sichuanese puts a slightly different spin on it, but hey ...

We saw it all the time when I was with Gumbo's. Billy used to race in Hong Kong and Cajun was a big deal over there at the time, so you would see a lot of menus with Cajun dishes right next to the Chinese stuff. Every now and then we would see it in a stip mall or somewhere when we were doing market research on a new city. The styles and flavor profiles aren't so dissimilar, it actually works kind of well.

Business First reports that the former Flat12 in Jeffersonville along the river will be a cajun and creole influenced restaurant and taproom.

Having lived in New orleans, I can say there's a pretty tight connection between the vietnamese and Cajun communities. Many of the fishermen and shrimpers along the Gulf Coast are of Vietnamese heritage. Dong Phuong Bakery in New Orleans East bakes the best French bread in the city.
