Jake & Elwood’s

by Rich S » Sun Feb 23, 2020 1:29 pm

Looks like Jake & Elwood’s will be taking over the old Clifton’s Pizza/Steve-O’s spot at 2230 Frankfort Ave. They ran an ad for a kitchen manager recently that described the place as “a fast-casual restaurant specializing in Chicago style deep dish pizza, hot dogs, Italian beef, sausages and more.” It doesn’t appear to have a website or Facebook page yet.

Rich, didn't there used to be (or maybe still is) a Jake & Elwoods Pizza Bar & Grill in the 100 block of Breckinridge Lane in St. Matthews? I wonder if this is related.

I think that place was where Saints is now; it must have closed at least 15 years ago. I don't know of any connection between it and the new restaurant.

Yeah, rethinking it, Blues Brothers references are probably a dime a dozen.

Here is a story about it from 1996. Pretty good read about "old" St. Matts.
"The idea is to eat well and not die from it-for the simple reason that that would be the end of your eating." - Jim Harrison

Looking at the LLC info, they seem unrelated.

Jon, I'm sure that's true. I was intrigued when I remembered the old joint with a similar name, but hey, Blues Brothers. :) . I'm pretty sure it's just a coincidence.

This place is supposed to open March 9. Kevin Gibson went to the soft opening over the weekend and was impressed:

I see a couple of major problems already!

From Kevin's review: "Thurley said the deep-dish pizza will be reminiscent of Giordano’s, the classic Chicago-based chain, while the dogs will always be Nathan’s brand, which is a Windy City favorite."

Giordano's makes a great pizza, but they are "famous" for a stuffed pizza, not the iconic Chicago deep dish. Their stuffed is actually my favorite, but their deep dish is second-tier to Gino's, Uno/Due, Malnoti's, Rosati's (tho this to some is controversial), and Pequod's (with Labriola as an upstart newcoming coming strong).

Second, Chicago's hot dog is from Vienna Beef, NOT Nathan's! Nathan's is a NYC/Coney Island stalworth, while Vienna has their factory in Chicago, supplies virtually all the Chicago local hot dog places, and is the "real thing."

Just for interest, Lonnie's Taste of Chicago uses Vienna for all their meats.

Yowza, Nathan's a Windy City favorite? That's just wrong on so many levels.

So, was Thurley wrong, or did Kevin hear him incorrectly?

I just called them up and asked . . . they only source from Vienna Beef, and have no idea where Kevin got the Nathan's idea! I feel better!

In the comments the writer also had to be corrected that it’s sautéed onions, not Kraut on the again mislabeled Nathan’s Polish sausage. What’s funny is that his picture makes that clear. Not his best work, I’m assuming.
