A tough nut to crack— what would you do?

by MarieP » Fri Oct 11, 2019 6:19 pm

At a (new) nice local establishment and ordered a dish with peanuts. But I think they overcooked them, and I feel like they are so hard that if I’m not careful I’ll break a tooth. They are throughout the dish and hard to avoid. Some are softer. I told the waiter, and he told the chef— the answer was that they’re roasted. I explained that I was afraid someone might break a tooth, and no real response. I understand anyone can make a mistake, but no offer to get me a new plate (albeit I’d already eaten a good bit of it). What would you do? I took a photo of the small, brownish nut bits. I managed to eat most of the rest very carefully. The waiter returned and asked if I wanted a go box for the rest— I said no and just left it at that. Everything else about the meal was great.

Marie, I'm having a hard time visualizing that dish. Could you tell us a little more about it? As for the basic question, it's always good to alert the server or management about an issue, but of course people are funny in their ability to accept criticism gracefully. ;)

Robin, I guess I'll go ahead and say where it was, as a fair heads-up. It was the Pagoda Noodles at District 6. I ended up tipping the 18 percent and making no more mention of the peanuts. I know another thread mentioned a few aberrations, so hopefully it will be resolved and fine-tuned soon. I really enjoyed the Spicy Fried Chicken Bao, a nice hot kettle of tea, and the blackberry wine sorbet! I will have to say that, though I prefer the pad Thai at Simply Thai, I thought the tofu in District 6's dish was the best I've had (albeit I don't have it often)-- perfect tenderness and seasoning.
