I think Mexico City is my favorite place to eat on the planet. Luckily I have an email I can cut and paste for you that has most of my recommendations. Have fun!

Fred, it's absolutely all right to post travel questions here. And Iggy, thanks for a great response!

FYI, if you both are okay with this, after a week or two I will then move this thread over to the Travel Forum. Even though it doesn't have a lot of new posts, people do go there to search for cities and find information. So it would be good to have Iggy's (and other?) responses over there eventually. But it's fine here right now. :)

I was just down there in May for about 5 days hanging with a former colleague who has been working there for the past year (I've been there many times over the years).

The place is way too big, and mainly decentralized to be so general. Getting across town to try out different dishes can be a monumental task.

If you speak Spanish, you can dip into local markets and grab fresh fruits, veggies etc. The food is tempting almost everywhere but hygene is a concern.

I will say, I had some dissapointing food at times. Sometimes the Mexican grub in our many restos here is better than the average place there (yep, I said it!). But, that is my experience and everyone has their own take....... bottom line--follow your nose and eyes!

I've never been to Mexico City, but Pujol is on my bucket list.

I just returned from Mexico City last week. It was my first visit and changed my view of Mexico and its people. I learned a lot of U.S. - Mexican history they didn't spend a lot of time teaching in my history classes!

Here's my list. They were all fantastic and in no particular order.

Maximo Bistro: #37 top 50 Latin America. Lalo across the street breakfast or lunch. Read my interview with Chef Eduardo Garcia
Nicos - top 50 Latin America. Tableside service for almost everything but inexpensive. Try the Escamoles!
Inside the San Juan Market - fantastic, inexpensive. Watch Tim and the Scorpion. Go for Lunch.
Quintonil - world top 50. Left there with the best photo ever!
Pujol - #13 in the world Had the tasting menu and lusted after the taco menu. Mole Madre aged over 5 years.
Nom Polanco - bottomless wine pairing, chef counter turns into a party after dinner. Chef Alejandro reveals he is a Mezcal man and gave us a full bottle of IBA 55 to share.
Lorea - unranked because they aren't eligible until this October. The Chef Oswaldo worked at Mugaritz 9 years in R&D meaning he invented the dishes there. Watch my interview with him. He answers the question of authentic Mexican cuisine and at the end what kind of man he is.
Diana - unranked but beautiful, delicious food

While there drink Mezcal and ask for a La Banderita in the King Cole bar. Sub Union Mezcal for Tequila
"I dined at my favorite restaurant last night. It was like Heaven, only better. They let me in".
