Mexican restaurant in Indiana

by Mark R. » Tue Jun 11, 2019 6:14 pm

We are planning on going out for dinner with some friends and we are talking about going someplace Mexican. They live in Greenville Indiana so New Albany/Clarksville… or something in that area would be nice.

La Lupita or Israel’s Delicias are probably your best bets. Robin’s reviewed both.

I highly recommend La Lupita. As Robin has mentioned, they feature Oaxacan dishes, so the menu is slightly different from most Mexican restaurants. Their Oaxacan style tamale is fantastic and I can rarely bring myself to order anything but the entomatadas. That is absolutely my favorite Mexican style dish in the area.

Haven't been to La Lupita, but Israel's place is top tier Mexican food. The guy is a chef, rather than a cook, and the menu is very different (higher class? more complex? not sure how to describe) than a more standard Mexican restaurant.

Sort of like comparing the Mayan Cafe to Los Aztecas? Both good, but very different!

(example: your average Mexican restaurant doesn't spend over 14 hours making a mole sauce!)

Look it up on-line and check the menus and compare . . . you'll see the difference. I don't doubt that La Lupita is among the best of the local places, but Israel's competes more with the Mayan Cafe's of the world. (that's a big overstatement, but it goes in the right direction!)

Has Israel’s Delicias always been in that building? I looked it up on google maps and remember going to a Mexican restaurant in that same spot years ago but can't remember the name?

I'm thinking it was La Rosita.

And Israel ran La Rosita, didn't he?

I don't know the details (and don't really want to know) but there was something about a divorce and Israel losing La Rosita as a part of that, and then about a year ago he came back?
