Pork chops

by Jeff Cavanaugh » Wed May 22, 2019 7:52 pm

Where can I get some really good, fatty, flavorful, thick cut pork chops? Everything I see in grocery stores and even Costco is thin loin chops from factory pigs with no fat or flavor in them. I don’t want to buy half a hog from a farm (right now), I just want some good chops.

We've gotten some good ones from Butchers Best In Prospect a couple of times. Also have you tried Red Hog?

Red Hog and Dreamcatcher seconded. Also, Stonecross Farm (and others) at the St. Matthews Farmers Market on Saturdays.

And, like it or not, Whole Foods.

Robin, we are only at Douglass Loop on Saturdays now. But we have a retail freezer at the Valu Market at Mid City Mall 24/7.

Also check Rainbow Blossoms at Gardiner, and Lexington. Also Seeds and Greens in New Albany and the N.A. Rainbow Blossom.

Meijers had some really nice looking thick cut chops that were nicely marbled but I can’t attest to the pedigree of their pigs. I don’t buy a great deal of pork. But they did have the cut you were looking for.
Seriously doubt they would be anywhere near DreamcatcherFarms quality.

I second and third Red Hog. I bought some there last year that were incredibly marbled and flavorful!

Just a fyi for all of us pork lovers Young and Robards Farm out my way here in Bullitt county are now selling whole and half hogs. They have an arrangement with an Amish farm who raises and processes the hogs. I just put in my order over the weekend. I think their pricing is fair 500 bucks for a whole hog with custom cuts, 180 lbs or so. You can find out more on Lindsey's facebook page "a farmers wife" I just am a good customer nothing more.

If Meijer has that, I wonder if their Fresh Thyme store a higher-quality version? May be worth a stop, as they are certainly close in!

I bought the most gorgeous looking boneless pork chops at Fresh Market this afternoon. They were labled "prime pork;" whatever that means.
