"Eat the World" Louisville Restaurant Edition

by david.abell » Thu Jan 25, 2018 9:57 am

I have friends that are doing an "eat the world" challenge, by cooking a meal from every country in the world. This sounds fun, but a lot of work, and as an alternative, I was curious if I could do this at restaurants in Louisville. I know there is no way to do every county, but I was wondering how many different countries' cuisines are available here in Louisville.

That's where I need your help! I've made a preliminary list and would love your help building it out. For some countries, like Italy, Mexico, and Thailand, I know we have tons or options and I've only listed a few, so feel free to add on! I also know that some restaurants offer food from multiple countries. Louisville has a wonderful immigrant community and I know that I need to make an effort to go out and visit more restaurants and not just the same places, so this is a great opportunity. Robin has written multiple articles on our immigrant restaurants, and that was a source of inspiration for this. Thanks for your help!

Eating the World Louisville:

China- Oriental House
Cuba- Mi Sueno Cuban Express
Ethiopia- Queen of Sheba
Guatemala/Honduras/El Salvador- La Guanaquita
Haiti- Caribbean Cafe
India- Dakshin, Tikka House

Ireland- Irish Rover
Italy- The Italian Table, Lupo, Bar Vetti
Jamaica- Rooftop Grill
Korea- Charim
Laos- Chik’n & Mi
Mexico- La Rosita's
Nepal- Kathmandu, Himalayan Restaurant
Nigeria- Funmi’s Cafe
Peru- Yummy Pollo, Carli’s Chicken
Somalia- Baraka Restaurant
Spain- Artesano Tapas, Vinos, y Mas
Thailand- SImply Thai
Vietnam- Vietnam Kitchen, Ngon Appetit

David, what a great idea! At a glance, that looks like a very comprehensive list. If there are any gaps, I hope the gang can fill them. I'll compare to my lists and see if I can come up with anything you've missed, but it really looks complete.

What about American? It's a tricky category to nail down or summarize in a single place, so it would be interesting to see what fills that slot.

I just assume every foreigner starts with a cheeseburger and a coke and works their way out from there. It’s kind of fun to see what “American” means as a category of food in, for example, London:

Great picks, Iggy! I especially like Chapinlandia.

Was Japan an oversight, by the way? Lots of candidates, but Sapporo or Hiko-A-Mon for starters.

Great idea, David!

Germany: Gasthaus
France: Brasserie Provence
Switzerland: Le Relais (maybe a little license here: Proprietor Anthony Dike is Swiss, so the French part of Switzerland. It gets you another country.)

Thanks everyone so far! Lots of good additions. Anything in southern Indiana to add?

I think the American category is an interesting one. What Louisville restaurant is the MOST American? Guy Fieri's Smokehouse?

I think I did forget Japan, as you said we obviously have lots of choices.

Let's talk food, not politics . . . as of today, the city of Jerusalem is in Israel. The food at Jerusalem Kitchen is eaten by all of those living in the area, whether Jews, Muslims, Christians, Bahai, whatever.

I'm fine with all that, Andrew, truly. The management is Palestinian, though, so I call it Palestinian in a descriptive, not political, way.
