South End Lunch

by Mike D » Sat Aug 05, 2017 10:23 am

We are going to the South End this afternoon and were planning on lunch at VK. But it looks like they are on vacation. Any quick suggestions?

Just found out that Annie's Cafe is open so we are going there.

Did you call them? We just had a report that they were closed too. :(

If that fails and you're set on Vietnamese, you might try A Chau, in the old Thornberries on South Third Street, just north of the Iroquois Manor shopping center that houses VK. A few doors west of Annie's on Woodlawn is Safari Grill, a West African eatery run by a couple of friendly guys, one from Somalia and one from Kenya. Good stuff, although the decor and menu are very basic. Then you could go across the street to Cocoberry Pops for a great dessert, better than Steel City.

Farther afield, you have great taqueria options in El Molcajete (Fourth near Winkler), which may be the city's best. But Santa Fe Grill a block east, or La Guanaquita (Guatemala/Honduras/El Salvador) over on Taylor Boulevard are both worthy, too.

Or just go to Valu Market and get a Cuban sandwich. :)

Called Annie's right before making that second post and they are open.

We love El Molcajete.

Good to know, Mike! Thanks for the update on the South End Vietnamese drought. :)

I've had 2 great lunches recently at Raima's Café in Iroquois Manor.

$3 Falafel, $4 shawarma, and a host of other Med/Arabic fare, pretty much everything on the menu minus the entrée/sampler plates are under $5.

Kinda reminds me of a little place or bodega you'd find on a side street in NYC

Raima's is good! I really liked the rice, which surprised me. Usually baba ganoush or something is the star.
