Educate Me - Vietnamese Vacation?

by Joni L » Thu Aug 03, 2017 10:26 pm

So, I planned on meeting my sweetie and his daughter at Vietnam Kitchen tonight, and they were closed for family vacation. We then went to Annie Cafe, and they were closed for the same reason. Ditto on another place (which name I can't remember) in the same area. So, just out of curiosity - is there a Vietnamese holiday or other reason for the timing?

But all ended well... we ended up sitting outside eating KILLER tacos from the trailer at El Rey, after running into the adjoining grocery to grab a few Coronas. The grocery was great - after tacos, I grabbed beautiful pork shoulder, nice produce, and dried chiles to make posole tomorrow.

Have a great evening!

Very interesting! I hadn't noticed that all the South End Vietnamese places closed at once, Joni. There does not appear to be any Vietnamese holiday between June 28 and Sept. 2, so I doubt it's anything major.

Beats me!

I deleted your duplicate post, by the way. No extra charge!

Thanks Robin and Iggy! All of the restaurants were closed for a few weeks, and my boyfriend's daughter said that the folks at VK have told her in the past that's when they go back to Vietnam. Very interesting!

Robin, I also searched for holidays and found none. And thanks on the duplicate post - didn't realize I had done that!

Just speculating with no knowledge at all, but I wonder ... Vietnam being tropical and having no winter but rainy and dry seasons ... I wonder if July/August happens to be a time when the weather is nicest over there?

Nope, that's not it either.

The best time to visit Vietnam is spring (February to April) and autumn (August to October). The temperatures are more moderate and rainfall is lighter. In spring, March and April have the lowest rainfall across all destinations and temperatures are pleasant, though still cool in the far north.

Haha, Robin! I love that you're as geeky as me! It's been driving me crazy to figure it out... I'm one of those "need to know" people, too!

Is it possible that our Vietnamese friends in the South End are simply friends with one another, and they all agree not to drive crowds to their colleagues' restaurants? That crossed my mind...

I'll be moving to the South End in the next several months, and I have to say that I love it! It's like going back 20 years in time neighborhood-wise, but all of the amazing ex-pats and their restaurants and groceries make it magical for a cook/foodie like me!

Another possibility I'll throw out is that since they were ruled by the French for so long I wonder if they possibly adopted the French way of taking vacations? Everybody in France takes at least two weeks, many take the whole month of August for vacation.

Mark, that's a GREAT theory! I hadn't even considered that. Thanks for weighing in!
