Pasteles? Popsicles. They're delicious at Cocoberry Pops

LEO's Eats with Robin Garr

Two popsicles at Cocoberry Pops.

I couldn’t leave the South End without checking another new spot, Cocoberry Pops, another street-food eatery that offers just one thing - a very good thing - Gourmet-style popsicles based on Mexican paletas.

Made with only fresh ingredients, organic cane sugar and no artificial flavors, these treats are only $3, and they are delicious. About two dozen flavors are divided between fruity and creamy.

A lime pop was fresh, tangy and tart, with a true lime-juice flavor. Caramel was subtle and sweet, not salty, just pure browned sugar. Chocolate was light milk-chocolate, evoking childhood Fudgesicle memories in a much more grown-up flavor. A cashew pop was non-dairy, but it tasted like fresh, sweet cream. More. I must have more.

It's locally owned by an Indian family, and I think they're a little bit better than Steel City Pops. More intense flavors. And that's saying something, because I like Steel City Pops.

Finally made it over yesterday, and I completely agree. I like it better than Steel City. Had a mango popsicle, and the missus had coconut. Both were great! Three bucks is a steal, too. We'll definitely be back to try that roasted peach flavor.

Glad you like it, Iggy! We've been helping host a Congolese refugee family who live just south of Churchill Downs, and every time we go out there, we take them over to Cocoberry for a treat ... for them and for us.

I went yesterday and I was surprised at how good they are. The price is the same as Steel City, as are the basic ingredients, but the mix might be different, as I found these broke up better and were easier to eat, whereas SCPs have a firmer texture. Both great, difference being that between 4 and 4.5 stars, but I'd choose Coco more often were it convenient.

I went there after the Sante Fe Grill (good, but the flavors are a good notch below El Mojcajete, Imo) -- a good double-dip trip (few miles apart) for one not in the area much. Or Annie's Cafe, right across the street from Coco.

Even the little Safari Grill, run by a Somali guy and Kenyan making East African food, is worth a stop. It's even closer to Cocoberry than Annie's. (And yes, of course, Annie's is more than legit.)

I wanted to point out that they now have a Frankfort Ave. location, a few spots down from the Silver Dollar. I went to the other spot and it was great -- this closer location will certainly get my business.

Yes! We’ve been in twice already. I should have said something, my bad. Also, Panchito’s is open in the former Banh Mi Hero on Bardstown just south of Douglass, with padteles, ice cream and tacos!

Aw, looks like Cocoberry is closing and moving to Florida.
