CJ has nothing but praise for North End Cafe

by Robin Garr » Sat Jan 19, 2008 9:59 am

Marty has no words but praise for North End Cafe today, as he bestows a glowing review (I can't find a single negative word) and a 3 1/2-star rating. It's a good review of a good place, and it makes me want to head over there for something to eat right now.

Robin,

Is it your understanding from Pableaux that Marty will still be doing all the reviews? I know Sarah didn't like to do them and wondered if this assignment of work might get mixed up a little with the new editor.

Deb, I have absolutely NO inside knowledge, but I think there's a slight misunderstanding of roles here.

The CJ's Food Editor (was Sarah, now is Pableaux) is a full-time staffer in charge of the entire food section, editing, making assignments and doing a great deal of the writing in the Wednesday Food section.

The Restaurant Critic (was Reigler, now Marty) is a free-lance contributor assigned to write the weekly restaurant review. And, apparently in Marty's case, also writing a weekly cool-food column.

Historically, it would be most unlikely for the food editor to take over the restaurant column, unless it was a major cost-cutting move. You may recall that one of my particular rants was that Sarah had started frequently writing articles about restaurants in the Friday "Dish" column that looked just like reviews but were non-anonymous and PRish, and readers had no clear way to distinguish between serious reviews and these puff pieces. I hope Pableaux doesn't do that.

North End is on my list of "banned" restaurants. It's a great spot, but nearly every time I go there, I have a bad experience.

I am just the opposite. It's one of my "go to" places. I've only had an issue once and it was taken care of in a great manner. Love the breakfast there.

Mmmm, that biscuit. Those biscuits are my favorite. They are literally a driveway away from me. Just one.

Marty and I usually agree on most restaurants but his 3 and 1/2 review of North End Cafe was way over the top. I find them mediocre at best. OK breakfast but other meals have been fair.

I love the NEC. When I do get a chance to eat there; it never fails to please me.

But mostly I really like there bar atmosphere.
