Help Identifying a Restaurant

by Jeff U » Thu Jan 17, 2008 1:10 pm

I am having dinner with a friend Friday evening before going to Comedy Caravan (first time in years). She mentioned a little Italian restaurant that she had been to recently in a small alley location on Bardstown Rd. She thought it was where the Butterfly Cafe used to be.

I know the Butterfly Cafe is still open so I am not familiar with where they used to be if she is correct.

Any ideas from anyone on the "mystery restaurant"?

Leah almost got it. It's fractured Italian, or a mix of Italian and French, for "The Red Rooster" - Le Gallo Rosso.

Nice little place. Here's a link to my review.

Thanks for the quick response and details.

I live so close that I am surprised I have not discovered it previously.

The gorgonzola fettuccine with mushrooms sounds terrific. Will check it out...

I just checked out their menu, looks great. Why have I never heard of this place? I think we might have just found our Valentine's Day destination? Wonder if they have any special menu items that night? Do you need reservations there?

I really wanted to love this place, but...

We ate there last weekend and found things to be uneven. The appetizer menu is a strange combination with the largely traditional italian-american entrees (eg. baby back ribs for app). But our seared scallop over paella rice was excellent: the scallops were huge and perfectly cooked and spiced. The fig salad was very good ( if pricy compared to the rest of the menu) and the house salad wrapped in cucumber was very good and a great presentation. Maybe our experience was an off-night, but my gorgonzola fettucine was not great (and I'd highly looked forward to it given the reviews): while it was huge and had lots of wild mushrooms, the sauce was gritty and not a lot of flavor. Maybe it sat too long ?..... Brian's lasagne was huge and very fairly priced; we personally would have liked it a little more spiced but were very happy with the leftovers, which made another meal.

The set-up is quaint and intimate : multiple little rooms. Ours unfortunately had temp control issues as it's adjacent to the kitchen. Their small outside patio looks very inviting when the weather gets warmer. Our server was very good and attentive. We were able to bring a nice bottle of wine from home (no corkage fee) which made for a VERY reasonable night out. And the Italian Cream Cake was very good: I avoided ordering it at first, and then had to run back in after leaving to get a to-go slice. It was well worth every calorie.

Just the thought of that Italian Creme Cake makes my mouth water. We love it so much we actually had three of them made and arranged them as our wedding cake. They decorated them absolutely stunningly, and we had RAVE reviews on them!
