The Melrose Cafe

by Ed Vermillion » Thu Feb 23, 2017 2:46 pm

"The Melrose Café" is now open at 13206 W Highway 42, right across the Jefferson/Oldham County line and geographically close to where the original Melrose Inn once stood. I tried out some lunch today, its 2nd day in operation. They are open from 07:30 - 15:00 everyday and are working on staffing with the hope of being open for dinner soon, if the response is good.

I had a burger dressed with blue cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickle & onion served on a pretzel bun. Flavor was good. I suggested they toast the pretzel bun in future as they are gummy otherwise. Sesame-Ginger Slaw was a very well flavored side.

I need to get a few more meals from here to give you my impression.

People were friendly and attentive.

Currently you order and pay at the counter and they bring your meal to you. They will need to tweak this procedure as too many people bunch up looking over the menu, ordering and trying to pay. It's a very clunky approach that should improve if they get some wait staff for table service.

Thanks for the report, Ed! The Melrose Inn was such a landmark for so long ... it will be great if they can successfully bring the concept into the 21st century.

Menus look interesting.
Is this a free standing building?

If you are coming up the hill out of Prospect it is the strip mall right past the Thornton station on the right hand side. If you get to the soon to be opened IGA then you've gone too far.

Recent obituary. Ann Smiser. This woman and her husband owned the Melrose Inn and Motel. Original owners, I guess? I'm familiar with the car dealership name.
