Thursday closings?

by Mike L » Wed Feb 15, 2017 9:18 pm

Anyone know of local restaurants in the Louisville area closing?

Yep, a bunch. Mostly taquerias. I plan to support a lot of them on days other than Thursday as a way of saying "Muchas gracias."

Details and a list here (in Spanish):

Sadly, I fear the people this hurts the most are the business owners and the people who already frequent these establishments. It makes a strong point, but I'm not sure that the point will reach the desired audience. The conservative voter in Hickman county will never feel the impact of this expression.

I was thinking the same thing Ronnie. I'll gladly support it but I'm not sure how effective it will be. Maybe instead of closing if they all just servered burgers and fries and nothing else.

I think it's about solidarity and expression, though, and I respect that. And from what I'm hearing from others, I'm not alone in my intention to give my business to a lot of these places in coming days and weeks as a signal of respect. Frankly, they'll have more impact if they can persuade most of the hotel housekeepers, hospital orderlies, roofers and such to take the day off, but in low-pay jobs with little employment security, that's a lot to ask.

A horrible punishment no doubt, but again, fails to reach the people who never darken the door of an "ethnic" restaurant. I guess where this would really hit home would be in the finer dining establishments when all of the dishwashers and prep cooks and bussers don't show up for work. But that would just result in them all losing their jobs, so again, the impact on the desired audience is minimal while the backlash on those sending the message is more impactful.

It's really hard to make this kind of point to a group that lives completely removed from people other than themselves.

Maybe a more effective demonstration would be for all of the lawn care professionals to stop working...?

Ha! We were thinking alike, Robin!

And I agree, I plan to spend more time supporting the little guys out there trying to make it and hope that those dollars make a difference.

It's good to do that irrespective of ethnic status. But it's also reality that immigrants are under particular focus now, very unfairly, and I think it's important to stand up against that.

They are too late in doing this. If this was done a few years back, it might have stopped President Obama from deporting more people than any other president in history.

We did not close but we were certainly affected. Our entire cool line is Latino and only ONE of them showed up for work tonight (the newest hire). It was interesting to see the management staff pump out food as the biggest scab line ever assembled. They did a pretty good job too.

And while I support the protest, those guys will be training their replacements starting tomorrow.

Why don't you remind us where you work, so we can never eat there again and be sure to tell management why.

Pitchforks on standby, folks. Gary was only speculating that they would be training replacements. I don't think he makes that call or is privy to such decision (correct me if I'm wrong here, Gary). But I fear this will be the response in many kitchens across the country... :(
