Coat Check -or- How Cheap am I??

by Doug W » Wed Jan 16, 2008 3:35 pm

Okay, here's the scenario: I went to Corbett's for lunch today. Everything was great - the soup of the day was Rock Shrimp Corn Chowder, perfect on a chilly day! Very tasty.

Anyway, it was cold, I was wearing a heavy coat and had it checked. Heading out I didn't really think of tipping as one of the managers handed me my coat back. While I was standing on the porch waiting for the rest of my party so come out, I realized I didn't offer any tip for the coat check. While I felt a little cheap, I thought I'd feel more awkward heading back in and offering a buck. You are always supposed to tip, lunch or not, right??

I guess because it was lunch I just wasn't thinking about as I normally don't go to places that offer Coat check services for lunch and I was thinking about what I had next on my agenda. Next time I will be ready.

While I am at it, what is a normal tip for coat check? I usually go with a buck a coat.

Regards,

Doug W.

Well, I hope a buck a coat is OK, because that's what I do too. And I have actually gone back in to tip. People always appreciate a tip.

Tips make my day a little brighter.

But don't feel too bad, I wouldn't know either

Don't sweat it. Not everyone tips for coat check. It's always made me a little uncomfortable to accept tips, but it's even more awkward to refuse. For hostesses standing in front of an entrance on a freezing cold night, enduring the constant drafts from outside clad in dress clothes and toiling over your coats all shift, then yes, compensate them. You could be covering their cold meds.

Oh, and yes, a buck a coat. That is the most common.

I figure this should lock it in my memory for a few years now.

Thanks for the feedback!

Cheers,

A buck for someone to take your coat and give it back to you when you leave?..Why is this even an issue?
Sometimes that coat check person might call you a cab when you think you don't need it!!! That buck will save you plenty in the long run!!!
