Alfarat Bakery/Takeout/Grocery

by Iggy C » Thu Jan 12, 2017 12:58 pm

The other day I went to an Iraqi bakery/grocery/takeout place called Alfarat (also written Alfurat on their FB page: https://www.facebook.com/ALFARATGROCERY). Al Farat is Arabic for the Euphrates River, it turns out. The place is at 7319 St. Andrews Church Rd. – basically just south of Manslick and Palatka. You can see tons of pictures on their FB page. They advertise a buffet, but I think they must have stopped doing that. They say they do cater, though.

I split a kebab sandwich ($3.50)and falafel sandwich ($2.50) with my wife. Those were the only two things on the menu, I believe. The kebab sandwich was dressed with lettuce, tomato, and what appeared to be a tamarind sauce. The sweet and sour taste combined with the beef, lettuce, and tomato wound up tasting oddly like a hamburger. The falafel sandwich was similar, but had a turmeric sauce instead. Both were served on crescent-shaped, chewy, samoon bread, baked in house. They were a good value for the price. They sell big bags of samoon for $3 – they hold up far better for making sandwiches than typical pita. Representative samoon pic here*: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... moon_2.jpg

What I enjoyed most of all was the khubz, though. It’s a flat bread, but much bigger, softer, moister, and floppier compared to, say, the pita at Al Watan. Probably a foot in diameter. It’s also much softer than the flat bread I had at Dino’s, for comparison, which was a pocket bread; whereas this is crumb all the way through, so you can’t stuff it. It went great with hummus, baba, olives, parsley, and labna. For $3 you get a massive bag. Here’s a representative pic (again, not mine) of what the kind of bread looks like: http://mmm-yoso.typepad.com/.a/6a00d834 ... 7a2970c-pi

Anyway, I loved the khubz and will be back for more – it’s far and away my favorite Middle Eastern bread you can get around here. Definitely interested to see if this place expands their offerings, since their differences are interesting. A nice place to visit after a walk in Iroquois Park.

*I would use my own pics, but I’m on mobile, and last time I embedded a pic from mobile it was unusably huge for the page. These are pretty close, though.

Thanks for the report, Iggy. Sounds like a South End trip is in order!
