The truth about latke

by Steve A » Thu Dec 22, 2016 8:15 pm

As if 2016 hasn't been trying enough, there's this from the Atlantic:
Each year, Jews throughout the United States mark the holiday by frying grated potatoes in olive oil, savoring a treat that is, as Nathan put it, “traditional, nostalgic, and crispy.”

Or, at least, crispy. Because there’s nothing traditional about the contemporary American latke. Virtually every element of it is a lie. Delicious? Yes. Traditional? Not in the slightest.

Just don't try to lay no boogie woogie on the king of rock and roll."

Well we Jews eat latkes because they're fried in oil. Same reason we eat donuts at Chanukah. We are celebrating the miracle of the oil that lasted 8 days rather than the expected one day.

"The effect is that Jews today eat latkes for Hanukkah. Latkes — potato pancakes — are a delicious reminder of the Hanukkah story. ... And this miracle, which is now at the center of the Hanukkah celebration, is commemorated by eating food fried in oil, specifically latkes. That makes sense.Dec 15, 2014
