Any San Diego suggestions?

by Christian Dreisbach » Tue Jan 15, 2008 10:47 pm

I realize that I am constantly asking for out of town suggestions and I hope no one minds- you all just have such good taste :)

Headed to San Diego next month...staying downtown- up for anything that you guys would consider not to be missed! Thanks as always.

I was there in November for a conference. I stayed at the Westin, about 8 blocks from the convention center through the Gaslight district. On my walk I spotted 4 Starbucks . . . and 5 Indian restaurants.

I thought the one just a half block from the Convention Center on the main Gaslight drag was quite good. I don't remember the name.

Here is a link that might help from Chowhound.

The Fish Market is the landmark seafood restaurant near downtown on the bay. The view is spectacular. I've eaten only in the casual downstairs area and the food is unremarkable. Supposedly, the Top of the Market restaurant upstairs is on another level ("another level" . . . get it? . . . never mind).

My favorites

I found a couple of places in San Diego that I really enjoyed and recommend.

For lunch I loved the Fish Tacos at the Tin Fish http://www.thetinfish.net which is located just outside of the Gaslamp District across the train tracks from the south end of the Convention Center (also near Petco Field). El Mundo's fish tacos are the closest representation I have had here locally.

For breakfast my favorite was Cafe 222 http://www.cafe222.com/. The peanut butter and banana stuffed french toast was excellent. I would place them in the same style category as Lynn's here locally.

Both of these places are within walking distance of the conference center. Hope you enjoy your trip!

I was in San Diego over Thanksgiving and had the pleasure of eating dinner at the Stone World Bistro and Gardens. It's the restaurant located within the Stone Brewing Company. If you like beer, they are the ones responsible for Arrogant Bastard Ale. I believe that tours of the brewery are free as well.

Here's the web address for the restaurant that includes menus: http://www.stoneworldbistro.com/. I had the tofu stir-fry for dinner but ate a little of everyone else's dishes as well. And everything was delicious!

A 15-20 minute to drive La Jolla is an absolute must. One of my favorite places there is Roppongi. They have some real interesting items on the menu. It does get fairly crowded there, so a reservation is a good idea. Also if you like Mexican food hit one of the taquieras scattered all around the city.

I am too afraid of the dark dining...my dry cleaning bills are bad enough as it is.

As an after dinner suggestion or just for a snack, I highly recommend Gelateria Frizzante. They are at 1025 prospect street in La Jolla and 435 Island Ave. in the Gaslamp Quarter.

They don't have a website but if you search on Gelateria Frizzante San Diego on google you will find some reviews.

The owners are former co-workers of mine and are having a ball and deliver a great product.
