Thank you!!! The mystery has been solved. This is the restaurant I couldn't remember because it was so long ago. At Taylorsville Road and Bardstown Road across from the Bard Theater.

Finally!!!

I had found the 2013 Hotbytes thread of course. Fred Kunz is a great source but to have this postcard photo. Wow!

Still wish we had a restaurant museum. It would focus on Louisville of course but would show different in small scale all the different dining situations in the USA. I would include a small scale automat.
There would be great memorabilia and yes, it should include chains started here - they could help finance.
Rotating menus? One from prior to 1900s? One prior to 1950s? One from Louisville history? One from chains?
Have food available for purchase, to go. Have Kentucky Proud food - no not Coke bottled here. :-) Produce when available.
Guess chefs, bartenders.
I thought the 'old' Armory would be good for that but maybe a whole new building.
Colonel Sanders/KFC museum should be included. Corbin is too far off the highway for very many people.
Already have bourbon and beer flowing. Why not food?
Recreate Jenny Benedict's tea room.

So, did Gruber's eventually become The Hickory House? (Because I remember that being there in the Applebee's spot as late as 1973. I thought that was considered Taylorsville Rd.) Or was it across the street on the other side of Bardstown Rd. where Travillion Rd picks up? There was something there on that corner that also housed, upstairs, a Sealtest ice cream store once upon a time.

Hickory House was another building, I believe. Same side of the street on Taylorsville Road, heading toward Bowman Field. Sealtest might have been at Trevillian/Bardstown Road. I had forgotten about that.
My doctor (Witten) and dentist (Ritter) were across from Karem's.
Shopped at Steiden's at the Loop before there was one near the AmVet Post recently purchased by Assumption?
Seems like more than a life time ago.
At the top of my street (Dartmouth) was a gas station, butcher shop, Von Allmen's, Miss Wheeler's Dry Goods, and Joe Fowler's Liquor Store.

Ran across the above obit while searching on the web. It lists the original address for the original Hickory House.
RIP Mr. Haynes.

Thanks Carla.

(I worked at the Holiday Manor Hickory House back in the 80s. Boy, was that a nightmare. More restaurants stories.)

Since everyone in my family has moved away or died and the same with my old neighborhood, it's nice to hear from people who have the same memories. Thanks Steve.
