River House adds boat docks

by Robin Garr » Sat Sep 03, 2016 3:42 pm

Is River House making an effort to replicate the Captain's Quarters experience? Not that there's anything wrong with that. Check this news release ...

River House Restaurant and Raw Bar and Levee at the River House, both located at 3015 River Road next to the Louisville Water Tower Park, can now accommodate the boating community with new wooden boat slips on the Ohio River and an illuminated stairway from the dock that leads to both of the restaurants which face the river from the elevated site.

Construction on the 8 standard size boats slips and dock was done by Rick Jarboe of Rick's Floors. Pave-Masters, LLC built the hillside flight of stairs made from concrete pavers. The project took approximately 2 months to complete.

Chef and Owner John Varanese has invested more than $125,000 in this project, as well as in additional improvements to the building since he opened in March. Other improvements include shades and tinting of all of the floor-to-ceiling windows in both restaurants, and new seating arrangements and decor in the private dining area at River House. Ten sets of Adirondack chairs and tables have been added on the banks of the Ohio to accommodate 20 guests for riverside seating. Colorful new umbrellas and patio sails round out the additions along the 200 ft. long outdoor patio facing the river.

Levee has also added regular nightly drink specials, including $5 glasses of wine on Wednesdays, $4 wells on Thursdays, and beer specials on Sundays.

"It's exciting to be able to invest our profits in both of these concepts," says Varanese. "Owning a riverfront dining option has always been a dream of mine and so far, it seems to be going pretty well. In fact, River House was just voted "Best New Restaurant in Louisville" by Louisville Magazine readers!"

Next year Varanese plans to resurface the parking lot, to add an extended patio, terrace and outdoor bar to River House, and to build a wooden deck with an outdoor grill area closer to the river. In 2018, Varanese plans to extend the parking lot and to build out the 11,000 sq. ft. space on the 2nd floor of River House, which will be used for private events and banquets.

River House is open Sunday-Thursday, 11am-11pm, and Friday and Saturday, 11am-midnight. Levee is open 4pm to midnight Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, and 4pm to 2am Friday and Saturday. For more information, call (502) 897-5000.

Its good to read that things are going well there. The river had been underused for way too long as it regards dining destinations. I haven't been there in a while, but I had read that Kingfish was supposed to do some renovations as well. Between the two places that locale will end up being a destination corner for riverside dining.

I think it's a very business savvy idea. It'll encourage river boaters to stop and eat, give the boat folk a chance to showcase their "rides" and add some fun entertainment to dining.
Hopefully the new docks will be more substantial than the ones in front of the Kingfish which seem to wash out with every spring flood.
