10 under 10

I just saw the below article on LEO, it was from a while back but is interesting. I think it is a great list. I love Rooftop Grill, if you haven't tried it, you should. What are some of your favorites dishes for under $10?

The 10 Under 10 aims to highlight great eateries throughout the city, not just in the food-journalism-magnet-slash-rich-people-playground known as Nulu. We dig deep into the constellation of globe-trotting, family-owned South End spots, then head out to the far West End for an authentic Jamaican meal before jettisoning to the heart of Theatre Square for a taste of the eastern Mediterranean, then off to a stealthy New York-style deli with an alleyway entrance and another one hidden by the airport — not to mention a couple of worthy spots in familiar dining destinations like The Highlands and St. Matthews.

Spot on! It's as if I came up with this list myself (without the anti-pork reference, of course). I have tried each of these places, and many are in my regular rotation. I suggest going with the shawarma sandwich at Safier, rather than the plate, though. There's a synergy there between the chicken (or beef), pickles, sauce and pita that is somewhat lost with the platter.

Yeah, Rooftop Grill is great. Overall that is a solid list. I am particularly pleased with inclusion of the tamarind okra dish at Dakshin -- that is a good call. They have a peanut eggplant dish that's quite good, too. Some other sentimental favorites of mine would be the gyro or sausage sandwiches at Jasmin Bakery, the toasted banh mi at Da Lat, the bun bo hue or banh xeo at Cafe Thuy Van, tacos or pupusas at La Chapinlandia, fried sauerkraut balls and a pitcher of Warsteiner at the German-American club, ropa vieja and congris at Bodega Mi Sueno, fried catfish at Franco's, ribs from a stand near 15th and west Broadway, mapo tofu at Jasmine Chinese, soup dumplings at Joy Luck, pretty much any sandwich or pastry at Wiltshire Pantry... I'm sure there's other stuff I'm forgetting.
