Let the Fieri hatin' begin

by TP Lowe » Mon May 09, 2016 4:05 pm

Celebrity chef Guy Fieri will make an announcement in Louisville tomorrow, according to a media advisory.

The advisory is from Fourth Street Live developer The Cordish Cos., which could indicate that a Fieri restaurant is going to locate there. It says Fieri will make "a special appearance and announcement" during the Hometown Tourist Attraction Showcase news conference.

I saw this announcement earlier and was going to post it but you beat me to it. I'm certainly not gonna start any Guy hating At least until I see what kind of restaurant he opens and what I think about it. I am going to continue by hating of where it's going however! 4th Street Live is designed to cater to people here for conventions and for twentysomethings that live here, not for the general population of Louisville.

To my mind we have nothing to lose. Fieri's place can't be any worse than anything else that may go into 4SL. At least that will commit him to drop into town here and there. .......as mentioned above, its all about conventioners and tourists in that part of downtown. Who knows what famous names will follow---first we have Jim Beam, then Junior, and now Guy. Maybe Emeril is next! Or better yet, Jacques Pépin.

Least we all forget, last year about this time the hot rumor was that Bobby Flay was going to open a restaurant in Louisville! I think we're still looking for it.

We've already had and lost Wolfgang Puck (near 4SL) and Paula Deen (not near 4SL; casino is close, though) - right??

The Wolfgang Puck restaurant, if you want to call it that, we had the convention center wasn't really anything he had his hand in it all, it was just something he got money from by letting them use his name! The Paula Dean buffet at Horseshoe Casino with basically the same thing, she may have showed up one time for PR but I highly doubt she ever even tried any of the recipes for the items they served.

Maybe if we get a restaurant from Guy it will at least be one that he has his hand in to some degree. Obviously he won't supervise any of the day-to-day operations but hopefully he will at least have his hand in the development of the menu and some of the menu items. I would hardly say the loss of the Wolfgang Park or the Paula Dean restaurants we had previously were even noticeable on the Louisville restaurant scene!

I had a drink and app at his NYC restaurant a few years back and was not disappointed. I enjoy DDD and thought there was no reason to not stop in. The sashimi tacos were nicely made and we'll seasoned, not the typical dude food that he gets trashed for. Will I ever eat a meal at the Louisville location? Pobably not, but it can't be worse than most of the other options.

I think one of the most brutal "reviews" I've ever read was the New York Times piece on his Times Square restaurant. It was a hit piece of the ultimate kind.

I hate to say this, but Guy Fieri is actually better than 4SL, so who cares?

Anything is possible, but I wouldn't count on that. I've said the same thing about Bobby Flay's place, if ever it happens. I think the Wolfgang Puck Express model is the way those guys go.

It will bare his name and seems to be a full-fledged operation, as opposed to an "express" model. Of course, that's left to be seen. In other words, if tourists and other visitors like it, then its a win-win.

I've posrted in earlier discussions that that area is under major transformation with addition hotels--Embassy Suites, Omni, and forthcoming hôtels in the Starks and Republic buildings. Let those who wish to dine at TGI Fridays, Hard Rock Cafe, et al. indulge as they spend their money in our city. Most of us, as well as many visitors, know where to go for more local fare and ambiance. I simply feel that you have to have some corporate, polished facade for many who don't care about local scènes. They just want to flock to disneyesque familiarity. I'm fine with that since 4SL doesn't define us as our foodie scene--and it doesn't by a longshot!......Benvenuto alla famiglia, Guy!

4SL is super lame, so I would imagine that things that go in there will be lame as well. Anyone have bets on how long this one goes?
