Derby & Oaks Safety Education 101: Bourbon

by Ed Vermillion » Thu May 05, 2016 8:23 am

A tad late this year but, with the big 4 day push starting this morning, still timely. Originally posted in 2009. Have a safe and Happy Oaks & Derby!

Please pass on to your friends and family from out of town or recently re-located new folks:

Attention: Please do not think that by walking on the hallowed soil of Kentucky that you automatically can start swilling bourbon with no repercussions. It has taken many of us a lifetime of study on how to responsibly imbibe the water of life. Many of us are still trying to master the complexity of this fine birthright and in many cases have failed. We begin a season anew with a well earned respectfulness borne of a lifetime of experience.

In its many variants it is as subtle as rain on a tin roof; slowly hypnotizing in its languid countenance, beguiling the unwary in to a false sense of control. The mellow mash glow infusing every limb, every insight a clarity of bonhomie. The tipping point is reached without any warning. Desperate the reckless abandon that follows. A personal treasure trove of kaleidoscopic memories are guaranteed the unwary.

Please respect the mash, as its initiates are legion but its masters are few.
