That bold print could say whatever it wanted, the presence of the line is a psychological anxiety trigger. The line is a suggestion, an implication, that something is expected to be there. No matter how many contrary messages you attempt to couch it with, that line still exists and the implications of it still have impact. Certain people will respond to its existence more strongly than others, regardless of supplemental contrary assurances.

Very True! There's something psychologically wrong with leaving the line blank for many people.

I agree with Sophia and I think Ronnie and Mark have accurately accessed the reason why.

This drives me to despair of any possibility of honest, forthright communication in our society today.

The same could be said about your position also Jeff. Those of us who disagree with your position regarding ignoring line even though it says you can sense an obligation to provide a tip when it is requested. Yes, it says "No Expectation" but we all know they just put that on there out of courtesy, they wouldn't go to the trouble of putting the line on the receipt if they really didn't expect it to be used!

Those of us who disagree with your position are just expressing our opinion about how we feel about the issue

"We all know?" How do we all know that? Of course they anticipate some people using the line, but when it says in big bold letters that it's not an obligation, absent anything else indicating that management is dissembling, choosing to believe otherwise is just willful misunderstanding.

Our restaurant just has "buy a round of beers for the kitchen" as a menu item, not a line on your bill.
