Mom's Lasagna

Memories Live on Through Recipes
Louisville Nonprofit Calls for Entries of Inspiring Stories and Recipes

Louisville, KY – Mom’s Lasagna, Inc., a Louisville nonprofit organization dedicated to funding cancer research, specifically breast cancer research, is announcing a call for recipes that are linked with friends or family members who are victims of cancer. The organization, co-founded by siblings Patrick and Beth Schmidt in honor of their late mother Patricia Schmidt, was formed after Patricia passed away from cancer and her lasagna recipe was the only item the children had in her handwriting. Each entry submitted will be posted on http://www.momslasagna.org and the end goal will be the publication of a cookbook or recipe calendar. All proceeds from the sales of the cookbook or calendar will benefit Mom’s Lasagna. The deadline for submissions is April 30, 2008. Each person who submits an entry form will receive an exact replica of Patricia Schmidt’s hand-written lasagna recipe. For more information or to download an entry form, visit http://www.momslasagna.org.

The idea to produce a calendar or cookbook was born when Patrick Schmidt discovered that his good friend Tim Heine had shared a very similar experience to his own. Heine’s mother also passed away from cancer, and to honor her he immortalized her hand-written, family-famous cheesecake recipe in a piece of architectural glass that is now on display in his kitchen.

“It was surprising and heartening to hear that someone else had used a recipe as a means to keep the memory of a loved one alive, and it made me wonder how many more unique stories like this one were out there,” said Schmidt. “Our hope is that by sharing these stories through a cookbook or calendar, we will be touching the lives of many others, inspiring them to continue using food as a way to bring people together.”

Robin,

I contacted Patrick Schmidt who runs Mom's Lasagna, and they are actually looking for all kinds of recipes (not just Lasagna recipes) for this cookbook.

If anyone is interested in submitting a recipe, the form is hard to find on their site. Here's the link: http://www.momslasagna.org/Recipe_Entry_Form.pdf
