Birthday Dinner Suggestions?

by Kim H » Mon Nov 30, 2015 7:53 pm

We don't eat out a lot anymore, and altho I keep up on this forum, etc, I'd love for you all to chime in! Where should we go for a special bday dinner this weekend? (note: I'm a light eater)

Kim, it's really hard to beat Seviche. Tell 'em you're a Hotbytes family member when you reserve, and they might even whip up something special for you. Or run you out, you never know. :)

I also like a lot of the new and hip NuLu places - Rye and Decca both make me happy, and from what I've been hearing about Wiltshire since Chef Jonathan Exum got there, I really really want to go back soon.

Want to try something so new that I haven't even been there? Over the 9, Butchertown Grocery, Le Chasse all will probably reward exploration.

But when it comes to a romantic special occasion, Mary and I are about as likely to end up at Seviche as anywhere.

This is only a handful of options. There are tons more. But that's what came to my mind right now. :)

Seviche IS hard to beat, but I'm thinking of trying someplace I've not been. I am an aquaintence of the owner's wife of Butchertown Grocery, and that appeals to me, but it might be a bit soon? I've heard lots of great things about Rye and Decca. I'll study their menus. Thanks!

Over the Nine is great for a light appetite! Small plates and entrees for bigger meals. Everything we have had there was fantastic.

Great thought, Suzi! I saw a piece on the restaurant/Paulin not long ago, and read some additional things - it definitely looks interesting, and worth checking out. Thanks for the suggestion!

May I suggest Bistro 1860. Many of the menu items are offered in three portion levels – bite size, appetizer and entrée portion which, in my mind, makes it perfect for a light eater.

Did some messages disappear, Kim? Or was there a different thread? The forum software is pretty robust, but if you ever spot a problem, let me know!

Excellent advice! Caffe Classico and Cafe Lou Lou also offer half-portions of many entrees, I believe, and would also make good choices for a light eater, if not quite as romantic.

For small plate dinners, you cannot beat Artisano! Some of the best food in the city, good prices, great drinks, fun atmosphere!

Only one problem: suggest going early or late. People tend to stick around (it's a fun place!), so they can't really do reservations, and early/late you won't have a wait.

Kim, here's a topic from not too long ago on downtown restaurants. More ideas herein ... Marketplace, for example, would be another outstanding choice that I don't think has been mentioned yet.

Not to my knowledge, Robin. I thought I read a thread about Over The 9 on here, but maybe it was somewhere else?

Great call, Andrew! I wish they took reservations though, as we will be celebrating my bday on either Fri or Sat night. Anxious to try it though, esp since they're close! (And it's Fernando!)

Wait. That might be perfect, because I don't like reservations. I like to go when I feel like it, which is usually later. Do you think 8:30 on a Friday might be safe? (Apologies for my stream of consciousness over here!)

I need to try them, and have heard great things. I tend to want to look at a menu first - I know I need to step outta my comfort zone!
