CJ loves Silvio's, and slips in a nasty Italian slur

by Robin Garr » Wed Nov 25, 2015 12:37 pm

CJ rates Silvio's 3 1/2 stars, sounds like 4, and casually slurs Italians. :(

"Melillo’s had the feel of a long-established joint in New York’s Little Italy, although the restaurant didn’t have the same age on it. And you didn’t feel you needed to sit facing the door, just in case. "

You try way too hard, Robin.

I don't even have to try, Adrian.

Really, though, this consistent tone-deafness coming from the once-newspaper of record isn't pretty, and it's not just the restaurant critic. She's very good at it, though.

I dunno, but I think you can end the references to old days at the CJ...it's been almost 30 years that Gannett has owned it.

I don't like to sit with my back to the door, or my back to anywhere that I'll have servers at my back. I don't like being surprised.

If I felt that I needed to sit facing the door, I probably wouldn't set foot in that particular restaurant in the first place.

Having grown up in Rochester New York where there is a significant influence from the Mafia you can always tell the good Italian places by feeling the need to sit facing the door! In all of the good ones you really wanted to be aware of what was going on and who was coming in and leaving, if you didn't you could be surprised.

I'm saying, if I was at all wary, I'd just skip the restaurant entirely... or at least get my order to go! :P
