Main Event coming to Louisville

by James Natsis » Sat Oct 24, 2015 2:21 pm

Anyone familiar with this place? They have a number of franchises elsewhere. Its being built in Sycamore Station Place visible from I-64 near the Blankenbacker exit across from the new cinema.

It seems to be similar to Incredible Dave's in that daddy can have a beer, watch sporting events, and munch on a pizza while the kids play. The beer menu is rather humdrum, and I'm sure the pizza and other grub will be short of award winning. But with the winter months nearing it could be a good Fri-Sat evening gig on a cold night.

Business 1st or maybe Insider Louisville had an article about that a couple of months ago when it was 1st announced, it may have even been posted on this forum but someone. I certainly agree with your description of what it will become and I don't really believe it's something that's needed in Louisville or someplace else. Even though I don't feel it's needed I'm sure it will be very busy because of the parents out there who really don't want to be parents!

Interesting observation. By this definition, if I understand correctly, places that sell alcohol, food, and offer entertainment for kids have "parents out there who really don't want to be parents." Does that mean that Chuck E Cheese, Kentucky Kingdom, Ky State Fair, the Louisville Zoo, Reggaefest, Thunder and the food courts, Mike Linnings, bowling alleys, etc. have parents who don't want to be parents? These places all sell alcohol. In fact, I've seen guys floating down the lazy river at Ky Kingdom with cocktail in hand!

Look, my 10-yr old has grown out of Chuck E Cheese and the McDonalds and Chick Fil A play areas. When its freezing cold in January, and kids are unable to play outdoors, they need to run around a bit somewhere. My 5-yr old doesn't do too well in Boombooz, Mellow Mushroom, Bearnos etc. after being cooped up indoors all day. He needs to run around. Places like Dave n Busters, Incredible Daves, Main Event, and I'm sure a few others, offer a chance to do just that. In addition, its nice to catch a Saturday evening basketball game on the screen while the kids have fun.

Bottom line--drinking one cold pint of beer in an evening is within legal limits and does not endanger a child.

I've long thought that places like Milwaukee and Portland (and all of Eire) get it right by understanding the friendly neighborhood pub as a family place where it's all right for mom and pop to bring the kids for dinner and conversation while the parents enjoy an adult beverage.

ehhhhhhhh.....I dunno about that whole one beer/legal limit thing...prolly depends on the state. A good buddy of mine in Minnesota stopped into a bar where I was tossing a few back and had -one- 22 ounce draft before picking his child up from daycare...He got pulled over for rolling through a stop sign and was asked to take a breathalyzer (I think he blew like .03...something like that) but because there was a kid in the car (it's called "aggravated circumstances") he got arrested on some kind of ridiculous trumped up child endangerment charge that almost cost him his job. Maybe the laws are different in Kentucky... but if it were me, I'd damn sure check the laws to be sure.

As for the "Main Event" (they refer to it as "Dave and Busters on steroids") I'm all for places like that. Hell put one in every neighborhood...The way I look at it, every little sugared up screaming mee-me in the place just means one -less- sugared up screaming mee-me in places I actually -want- to go.

The objective here is to leave the "Daddio on the Patio" without any kiddios!

I know nothing about Main Event, but Dave & Buster's is not a place to turn loose your children. It's very adult oriented. It's nothing like Gattiland or Chuck-e-Cheese.

Venues can still serve alcohol while remaining family friendly. The local baptist minister (along with many small town governments) might disagree. Ive never seen a beer jump out of glass and into the closest childs mouth, dooming them for eternity. Nor do I think consuming small amounts of alcohol around children severely inhibits ones parenting ability.

Ive only been to Dave & Busters once and it had an adult vibe to it. I would imagine Main Event will clearly identify its target audience before opening the doors. Im hoping it is "kids welcome with constant adult supervision" rather than the Chuck E Cheese/Kentucky Kingdom "let your kids do whatever they want" model.

Price point will also be important if they choose the former.

Dave and Busters definitely not a turn your kids loose type of place. But it is a place that you can take your kids for sure...to Steve Ps point, the place is extremely loud and vibrant, so if i take my kids to eat there i don't have to worry about them sitting quietly in the booth, they can pretty much be kids and not bother anyone, unlike 90% of other restaurants where we constantly shush them.

I think this will be a great addition to the city. Its definitely not going to be geared toward foodies, so i don't see it appealing to most people on this board, but it does fill a niche that is pretty vacant. Incredible daves was more of a chuck e cheese with alcohol. I think it tried to be more than that but it just wasnt. There just wasn't much there for adults to do WITH the kids...unlike a dave and busters. Probably how it earned its reputation as a place to be a bad parent.
