Bread for french toast?

by nicole.bright » Fri Oct 02, 2015 11:43 am

Where's the best place locally to buy some fresh bread for a french toast brunch tomorrow? Is Breadworks still around? Wiltshire Pantry?

Breadworks is still around and they sure do have some good bread. Blue Dog Bakery also has some excellent bread as do most of the larger bakeries around town. As for bread to make French Toast from I really don't think having extremely fresh custom-made bread is a big advantage. Almost any decent bread works very well depending on your preferences. I almost think that bread that is a little older makes better French toast because it's not so likely to fall apart when soaked in the egg mixture.

For FT, I use the premium white loaf from Breadworks -- they are still around and have a few locations. Just don't have them slice it, as their machine cuts it too thin for french toast.

I would think Panera's bread would be fine for this. I occasionally get loaves of sourdough; they can set the machine to slice it thick. Not quite Texas toast but thicker than store-bought.

Challah bread is my favorite to make French toast. You can buy it freshly made at Breadworks, Cake Flour, Panera. Trader Joes has packaged loaves.

Decent airy french bread is my go to favorite. The bread has to soak up the batter and be porous enough to soak up the compote, butter or maple syrup. Don't overthink it. The batter is equally important. I make french toast every sat for breakfast at the Shady and it rocks..really.

Concur. Some Kroger stores also have fresh Challah, usually on Thursday/Friday. (Challah is an egg bread, and works exceptionally well as French Toast . . . it's a Jewish tradition to eat it on Friday nights, thus Kroger and others being more likely to stock it Thu/Fri)..

If I'm not mistaken, Breadworks makes it only on Fridays.

Whatever you bought the day before at Blue Dog and left out on the counter overnight. There is a reason the French call it "pain perdu"

Yeah, I thought you were supposed to use stale bread for French toast, not fresh, high end bread.
