Best Louisville Pub Grub

by Adrian Baldwin » Thu Jan 03, 2008 9:26 am

I have a few friends who swear by certain Items at certain places: Like the Burgers at Bambi bar or the Chili at Kern's. People who love fine dining, but still get a hankering for their favorite Bar Foods from time to time.

Pub Grub is generally about the same for the most part, but there can certainly be places that stand out with certain items or specialties. What are your favorites from some 'low key' spots around town...?

^ what to get at above places?

Bristol is supremely overrated imo, but I definitely *love* their green chile wontons!

Haven't been to Saint's in awhile.

Love their Fried Ravioli & their Cheese Bread w/ toppings. Great apps for watching a game.

Cumberland Brews: Jerk Chicken wings and bison burger with blue cheese (so, so good)

The Irish Rover: Cordon blue fritters, fish and chips or the Welsh rabbit which is a simple but amazing grilled cheese sandwich with thick fries just the way I like them.

I don't know if it qualifies as pub grub, but the brisket at Kentucky BBQ Co. is the bomb.

I second Baxter Station too.

Fish and chips at Shenanigans on Norris Ave. They also have a great spicy chili without spaghetti.

Define "pub." Define "grub."

by Robin Garr » Thu Jan 03, 2008 11:55 am

I see a lot of really varying definitions of "pub grub" here. I love Baxter Station, but to me the food is several cuts above pub grub. The Bristol Downtown has a serious chef and wine program, and so that facility, at least, is really hard for me to rank in the "PG" category. Same, in a way, for Browning's and BBC. Even Cumberland Brews, which I love, doesn't really seem to fit into quite the same niche for me.

For true pub grub, I'd nominate Flabby's and probably Germantown Cafe as the best of the real thing.

the spinach kase at Richo's
the pulled BBQ at Cumberland
the fish sandwich at BBC on Shelbyville used to be really good
