You can help GRIND raise bucks via Kiva Zip

by Robin Garr » Mon Aug 17, 2015 12:45 pm

Liz and Jesse are seeking microloans through Kiva (an excellent organization) to help with their move to Nulu. I just made a small contribution, and you can, too!

This is a loan, good way to double your money up to $500 though.

If I'm reading the page right, the loans through Kiva will be repaid? Am I understanding that this isn't like a Kickstarter, just a crowdsourced loan?

Yes! Kiva Zip is totally different from Kickstarter and Indiegogo...

When you lend on Kiva it's a loan, and 100% of the amount lent makes it's way to the borrower. Paypal manages all of the transactions (and waives all fees). If you like your experience you can tip Kiva while making a loan (501c3) tax deductible, or zero that out and just make the loan. Over the course of 24 months it will be Grind's responsibility to pay their loan back, and you can either withdraw your repayment or lend it again!

Note: I served as the Kiva Fellow here in Louisville during the launch in 2014.

Yes, as the OP said, "microloan." Through Kiva, an established organization. It's different from the Kickstarter model which asks for a donation (usually rewarded by some kind of premium).

I guess the contribution word tricked me, not great with English but I looked it up, so I'm still confused :(

On the article it says you can donate up to $500 and get $500 back? Is that true because that would be a good investment? I could buy a computer for my family with that when I get the $1000 back?

Pretty sure there is no ROI. Just like loaning a friend some money and they pay you back without interest.

Lending through Kiva involves risk of principal loss.
Kiva does not guarantee repayment nor do we offer a financial return on your loan.

Zero interest loan, paid back monthly. It is an investment in your community or a new business. I have done several and am getting payments that I have reinvested in other loans. :D

I guess i was just in a bad mood. But think about this: This topic was intended to support Jesse and Liz and their GRIND project. They're good people, and they deserve support. I really did not want the discussion to turn into an argument about whether Kiva involves donations or loans. As the original post said, Kiva Zip is a microloan program.

Juan, what is your native language, by the way? I would have guessed Spanish, but the posts you put up in the "caliente" food thread didn't seem to be all that fluent, either.
