Lydia-House Has Come To Life

by RichardM » Thu May 28, 2015 10:47 am

This past Sunday morning we made the short jaunt over to Lydia & Hickory in Germantown to visit with Lydia-House. The former Flabby Devine’s is now a breakfast and lunch spot and on Saturday and Sunday they have brunch from 10-4. The old “Flabbys” sign and bar back are still there, although the sign is inside not on the front of the building. The amount of work that Emily has done to the interior is just amazing. It is unbelievably wonderful.

I am a big lover of breakfast and rather old school. I have moved on from many of those things I find to be a necessity like toast being buttered when it comes to the table. And, at Lydia-House there is good reason. A basket of Blue Dog Bakery bread toasted and brought to the table with soft butter to spread on it. For my breakfast I chose the Classic which is two eggs with thick cut bacon and roasted potatoes. ($8.50) There is a whole different skill subset for breakfast cooks as opposed to line cooks for lunch or dinner. Emily has already got her back of the house well trained, as my over medium eggs came out with the whites done and the yellows runny. The oven roasted potatoes were a great change from shredded frozen cooked hash browns. Three pieces of thick bacon cooked done but not break apart crispy - what’s not to like.

The toast is extra. It is a basket of toasted bread that is enough for two. ($5.00) Much more and so much better than 2 orders of toast at breakfast places.

My lovely bride had her favorite, Eggs Benedict. Two perfectly poached eggs on toast with thick sliced grilled ham covered in housemade hollandaise sauce and a side of roasted potatoes. ($10.00) The thick ham slices were different but she really enjoyed it. Usually we offer each other bites from different dishes, on this morning none flowed from her plate to mine, even with a tempting bite of the thick bacon put on the edge of her plate. She used the crusty toasted bread to sop up the runny yellows of her eggs with delight.

I stopped in for weekday ‘breakfast’ and had DECAF Coffee which she made for me so it was wonderfully fresh and really good coffee. It was my one cup every 3-4 days coffee. They do NOT do regular breakfast during the week. So no bacon and eggs, toast and coffee. BUT. What she does have is House Made Pop Tarts. Let that sink in for a moment. Kellogg’s eat your heart out. I had a Strawberry Jam filled one. The crust reminded me of my grandmother’s pie crust. The bits and flakes on my plate, yeah, i did, with my finger. You can’t beat that breakfast

I have not stopped in for lunch yet but the menu looks wonderful. My first item will be a Rueben as I am alway son the hunt for the best Ruben in Lousville. After lunch a couple of times I will post a follow up.

There are other exciting things coming to Lydia-House so stand by for more info as I learn about it. And come join Suzi & I for Brunch on the 31st at 10.
