90 year old chicken

by Jerry C » Tue May 05, 2015 7:36 pm

I thought my subject might get a few looks that some other would not...anyway...

My 90 year old mother wants chicken for mothers day. Her normal go to is KFC (one piece breast meal w/ mashed taters w/gravy and coleslaw), but I refuse to take her there for mothers day...I know...I am a wonderful son. :D

She does not like anything "highfalutin", so can I get some recommendations for some low brow places...not too spicy please.

Goose Creek diner is the first place that comes to mind! They have some really great fried chicken and they use to at least have an all-you-can-eat special for it on Sundays. Not sure if they still do that or they will do it on Mother's Day but there chicken is still great.

Cottage Inn has spendid fried chicken.

Added belatedly: I'm pretty sure it's not open on Sunday, though. :(

Colonel's Lady in Shelbyville? I believe it's essentially KFC chicken but not in a KFC (don't know if they're open Sunday, though).

Are you referring to Claudia Sanders dinner house? If so it is open on Sunday and closed every Monday. I believe they have a buffet all day Sunday that costs about $20.

That's it, Mark. Thanks for the correction. I should know better- my wife went there just this past weekend! I see from their website they are taking Mother's Day reservations.

Claudia Sanders is always slammed on Mother's Day. Definitely call first if you want to try to get in there.

I don't know if she'd think Jack's was too high-falutin, but their chicken is fabulous. They take reservations- a mandatory on Mother's Day and there are typically a lot of older clients there. Highly recommend!

Can someone give us a frank current quality report on Claudia Sanders / The Colonel's Lady? For a long time it was just awful, lacking in both food and service, living off the old image of Colonel Sanders before he went corporate. I haven't been for years, though, so it may not be fair for me to bash it on the basis of old experience. What say you, foodies?

Some family dragged me out there a few years ago. Conclusion: meh.

Full disclosure... I don't typically like buffets and their 'Grab a root and growl' approach to service.

The chicken was OK for steam tray chicken. And the other recipes seemed straight out of the "Campbell's Soup" recipe book or maybe just a big institutional sized can.

Not worth the trip or the hassle, IMHO.

I just want to thank you for introducing me to the phrase "grab a root and growl."

It will be crowded but I think Huber's has great fried chicken. Definitely make a reservation. It might be over the high-faulutin line but Sway at the Hyatt has good fried chicken and it's a lot closer. Strangely enough, it's easy to get a table there. Finally, I have to say that the fried chicken on the brunch buffet at the Bristol is awfully tasty. It's salty and greasy and that works for me. An early seating there would be easy to get.

I originally made reservations at Claudia Sanders, then read the reviews. For the past year, it looked like they averaged just about 1.5 out of 5! I cancelled the reservation 10 minutes later. Not going to subject the entire family to that.

I re-read some older discussions on hotbytes and came up with Dasha Barbours Southern Bistro at 3825 Bardstown Rd.

Anyone been there?

The Sunday Brunch Buffet at the Rudyard Kipling. The owners originally had That Place on Goss and have a fantastic brunch. Great fried chicken, salads, fruit, pancakes, biscuits and gravy, sausage, bacon, hot brown casserole, omelet station, both Nord's donuts and in-house made desserts. Always have a great soup, Brie cheese with honey and almonds, and on holidays they make Gravlax. Starts at 10am until 2pm.

If the weather is scheduled to be good, totally agree with this one! It's a nice drive into the country, you can walk around the gardens, and it's a nice day. The chicken is meh-plus (better than Claudia's), but the experience is good.
