Advice sought for Caribbean meal in L'ville

by James Natsis » Tue May 05, 2015 7:38 am

Greetings fellow foodmeisters,
I'll be entertaining guests next weekend who are seeking Caribbean fare such as jerk chicken, yucca, and the likes. I don't normally eat this type of food. Can you give me some ideas? Thanks

is the only thing that I can think of.

I'd love a restaurant that served jerk chicken.

I still miss Mo Flav so much. And they've been gone for 15+ years. Louisville definitely has a need for that type of restaurant again.

If Cuban fits the bill, try TropiCuba on Frankfort Avenue at Clifton. I think it's the best Cuban in town, and I've also heard that they fix some killer drinks. I have been there three times but not since they finally got their liquor license.

Robin reviewed it fairly recently.

I noticed this place recently in the listings in Food and Dining -- I hadn't heard of it before, and don't know if it's any good. (I think Louis Coleman Drive is 34th Street.)

Roof Top Grill, 708 Louis Coleman Jr Dr, (502) 785-4069
This little spot just off Broadway is authentically Jamaican, its brightly colored chalk menu offering items such as jerk chicken, jerk rib tips, curry chicken and oxtails, and sides of rice, meatless collard greens and cabbage. The Jamaican owner even makes his own seasonings.

I've been to Rooftop twice -- it's great! Spicy goat curry, jerk chicken, patties, all very satisfying. Picture turned out blah, but the spice is real.

I would also recommend Bodega Mi Sueno #2 on Bardstown Road. Casual, tons of variety, huge portions, friendly staff, high quality -- esp. the lechon. Their FB page usually is a good representation of what you'll get. I don't think there's any Cuban place in town where $10 is better spent.

The Roof Top sounds great. The wife is from St Vincent. They are coming to L'ville on a 24h ethnic food shopping spree from West Virginia. I have a Korean friend in WV with whom I made the rounds as well. We have some pretty cool ethnic stores that we often take for granted. Picking up fresh yucca roots in L'ville is a rather simple task. But I was surprisingly tasked recently to bring some back to Charleston because the person could not find any there.

Thanks for the tips and more are welcomed if you have any.

Made it to the Roof Top this afternoon. All the raves above were well deserved. The food was tasty, the offerings were plenty, the place was clean, and the owners grateful. We all enjoyed it and my friend called it the real deal.

Don't let the address deter you. It is in a commercial district and kind of fascinating in a cultural sense.
