Ethnic Grocery Simpsonville?

by Doug Davis » Sun Apr 05, 2015 6:07 pm

Okay I need some foodie help.

Its Easter, I have failed as a parent. All my 3 year old seems to care about is watching Youtube videos of people opening chocolate eggs with small plastic toys inside. And when she didnt get that for Easter was devastated.
So this morning I sought them out at Target and ToysRUs and other local retailers. FInally the sales guy at ToysRUs relayed the info that they are made by European companies called Kinder or Zaini, but that they didnt carry them because they were illegal in the US.
But! He says he heard there is an ethnic grocery/food store out near the outlet stores in Simpsonville that has them. I have Googled my heart out but cant find a listing for an ethnic grocery or food importer in Simpsonville.

Does anyone have idea about what he is referring to?

Definitely not an ethnic grocer near the outlet mall. There is a space on US 60 in Simpsonville that comes and goes as a Mexican/Latino grocery, but not sure if it's operating right now.

As a former Simpson-villian I don't know of any grocery stores not to mention ethnic ones. Maybe a tacqueria or two.

I've found Kinder eggs on amazon, so not sure why it's said that they are banned...

The only reason I could think they might be banned would be that the small toy inside was a choking hazard. That's one of the items that Federal Consumer Protection Standards watch out for quite closely.

From wiki:

The 1938 Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act contains a section highlighting that a confectionery product with a non-nutritive object, partially or totally embedded within it, cannot be sold within the United States, unless the FDA issues a regulation that the non-nutritive object has functional value.[9] Essentially, the 1938 Act bans “the sale of any candy that has embedded in it a toy or trinket”.[10]

Guess the internet makes it tough to ban things appropriately. :D

Get it from small family bakers that are either exempt from the reg or fly under the radar, would be my guess. Plehn's King Cake, yes. Pillsbury King Cake, not so much. 8)

More and more, bakers are leaving the baby out of the cake and packaging it on the side, although in New Orleans that's considered heresy.
