Pro tip to the CJ food reviewer

by Robin Garr » Thu Mar 26, 2015 1:03 pm

If you dislike a little mom’n’pop ethnic place so hard that you feel obliged to lead with their spelling errors, you should probably bag the review and go somewhere else.

As I posted on Fb, it was just mean-spirited. I know we speak English here and gammar and spelling are important, too, but it's a small mom-and-pop place, where the owners pretty obviously speak English as a second language. Cut them some slack. Oh and I like their food!

There used to be a reviewer who would point out the misspellings and mistakes in the programs of local community theatre shows. Obviously, that was the most important part of the productions.

Also at the CJ?

I have to admit, I was sorely tempted to make fun when I ran across an Asian restaurant that had "crap rangoon." But somehow I resisted the impulse.

I take it a little more seriously when a high-end place that brags about its wine program gets wine info wrong, but I think that's more in the realm of fair game than a tiny mom'n'pop with immigrant owners. Where's the benefit to anyone in giving over a week's review space to slamming a place like that?

More and more, it seems to me, Nancy is carving out a spot as a natural successor to Susan Reigler.

Wow. That's a pretty Busch league move. Sad.

I solved the problem by going to Little Jerusalem.

My husband and love their food! It's always scrumptious! Service has always been excellent there, and value for the money is fantastic! As for spelling errors...it's beyond me why the critic thinks that's important.

After reading her review I want to try the restaurant. I've never been there before but based on her review I now want to go and try it. Starting off a review worrying about spelling on the menu is totally outlandish especially for a restaurant of this type. It was something like Morton's steakhouse or a national chain it would be one thing but for mom-and-pop operation like this who cares!

No pun intended, Robin. "Busch League" is just as valid as "bush" league. The former derives from a derogatory, sub-par race in NASCAR, while the latter, and older, derives from baseball referring to playing remote, "local" teams in the "bush" or "sticks."

I was thinking of Anheuser-Busch, which makes bush-league industrial beer ...

That is harsh! Really really harsh!! But, then again, I have thought that since her second review, and Reigler was a better writer of the English Language. Just Saying.

This comment hits it on the head; I'd let spelling slide on this type of place. I could maybe understand the commentary on a bigger establishment. Bottom line is that the reviewer should be there for the food. Now if every other word on the menu was misspelled that might be different.
