CJ: Food heavenly, service hellish at Our Best

by Robin Garr » Sat Dec 22, 2007 8:51 am

Marty enjoys great food and terrible service at the newish South End branch of Our Best, the down-home eatery in Smithfield, Ky., that recently opened its first outpost in Louisville and has declared the hope of growing into a chain. He makes the food sound divine and the service hellish, a combination that yields a seemingly appropriate 2 1/2 stars. At 544 words, it's on the concise side, but it's still hard not to notice that the restaurant review is now the only full-length feature in a new Scene format that otherwise constrains all content to a single paragraph.

I had never heard of it. It's nice to see Marty searching out some South End "outposts." :)

I agree that all the published food writers should pay attention to the entire metro, Vince.

I know it's hard to keep up with this busy forum, but there has been some discussion of Our Best around here for years, both the Smithfield original and the developing plans for the Preston and other Louisville-area outposts.

I have been to Our Best in Smithfield a couple of times. The food AND service have been good.

My understanding is that the Preston St place is what is supposed to be a prototype for a chain. Owned by someone different than the original.

If they want to expand, they better get somebody that knows how to train the employees, especially the front of the house.

I believe they have sited this place perfectly. Good food, good quantity, good value and if service improves, which will probably happen with experience they, should do well.

I went there recently, and had a very similar experience... good food, poor service. Lots of mix ups, appetizer came with dinner, wrong sides AND the waitress tried to argue with me about what I had ordered, forgot my fiance's cornbread pancakes, long periods with no drinks... but the food is good, I'll give them that. I just won't be going back until they can do something about the poor service.
