CJ's got 4 Christmas stars for Gasthaus

by Robin Garr » Thu Dec 25, 2014 2:07 pm

The CJ loads up on German goodies at Gasthaus and loves it. I’m not sure about comparing the schnitzel to Manolo Blahnik, though.

Gasthaus gives plenty of reasons to indulge

Gasthaus on break, closed until Jan. 6

by Robin Garr » Thu Dec 25, 2014 4:37 pm

Mary Anne pointed out on the HotBytes Facebook page that Gasthaus is currently on its annual two-week winter/Christmas break and will be closed until Jan. 6.

This seems like either a carelessness failure or, worse, an "I don't give a flying" failure on the CJ's part.

We went this past Friday for their final night before closing for the holidays.
The service was a little slow but friendly and efficient.

The food......wow. All of the traditional German dishes were on point. But, thats not the point of this post. For dessert that night I shared a strawberry napoleon with my daughter. Rather than the standard layered cake like serving this napoleon was instead baked with the flaky, buttery puff pastry in the shape of a large muffin with all the gooey pudding and fresh strawberries contained inside. And topped with chopped, toasted almonds. The pudding was amazing and the strawberries were fresh and juicy.

Although normally a chocolate guy, this was easily one of the three best desserts I have ever eaten in my life.

I only wish it hadnt taken me six years to convince my wife to go there with me, it makes me wonder what other amazing creations I have missed out on.
I eat, therefore I am.

I found this to be one of her her most well-balanced reviews yet. She certainly spent the most of it discussing the food and didn't spend have the article talking about the building, ambience or staff idiosyncrasies like she has done so much in the past. Maybe she's finally settling into the job and realizing what people want to see in restaurant reviews.

That was a glowing review, and I've never heard anything bad about the place. I really need to go! The closest thing I've had to schnitzel is chicken-fried steak. I never tried Kienle's Delicatessen, either, but I always heard that place was a little weird.
