Top 5 Pizzas in Louisville Area

by Adrian Baldwin » Thu Dec 20, 2007 10:11 am

Okay, rankings threads are my favorite, and they seem to be lacking around here.

Quick, simple, and makes for good discussion. So, name your top 5 pizzas in Louisville. Be as broad or specific as you like...

1. Impellizerri's - Quite possibly my favorite Italian Sausage anywhere.
2. Wick's - Hate BBQ chicken pizzas in general, but absolutely LOVE Wick's version.
3. Hero's - My choice when I go NY style. Usually straight Pep is my order
4. Queenie's - The only real Chicago-style stuffed I've found here
5. Danny Mac's - My favorite thin/square style. His deluxe is very good

Top 'to try': Vito's (heard good things), Za's, Jockamo's, and the Southern Indiana spots Robin touched on last week.

Go!

Truley subjective and in no particular order are my five faves...

1. Hero's...I'm so glad this place is close to me, as close to a real N.Y. pizza as you can get
2. Za's...Great Crust and Sauce and interesting topping choices, not to mention a good beer selection.
3. Sportstime/Rich O"s...Better than average pie but the best selection of beer locally.
4. Rocky's...Consitantly good...I just had lunch at the new location a few days ago and and feel it's every bit as good as the original.
5 Pizza King...Nothing else is like it!

Let the debate rage on!!!!!

1. Cliftons (Its comfort food to me)
2. Fat Jimmy's (I love their specialty pizzas)
3. Primo (Can't help it - Allo Alumni)
4. Flannigans (With a pint)
5. Wicks (The cheesiest)

I'll also admit that I haven't been to a bunch of those places listed below

2)Boomboz
3)Charlestown Pizza Company
4)Slice of NY
5)Clifton Pizza Co.
I am the original Mike G, never mind the impostor.

Rich-O's (far and away best in the REGION.) this is a glaring omission in my dining experience.

I still need to try Queenie's and Vito's personally.

Queenie's = Windy City. Always forget the name change. I've heard their thin crust is really good too, just can't get away from the Chi-Style.

What type of pizza is Vito's? Been meaning to try that pizza for a long time...

1. Luigi's - Veggie Pizza specifically. I'm a carnivore and I would choose this pizza over any I've ever had.
2. Boombozz - I like several of Tony's pizzas, but especially the quatro staggione (sp?).
3. Rocky's - Whole Wheat Crust.
4. ZA's - Whole Wheat Crust.
5. Wick's/Impellizeri's - I haven't been to the new incarnation of Impellizeri's yet, but I assume it is still as good.

Can't really do this without specifying style.

AUTHENTIC ITALIAN

Primo

NEW YORK:

Hero's
Luigi's

LOUISVILLE

Original Impellizzeri
Tony Impellizzeri

CHICAGO

Windy City (but I still like their thin-crust best. I'm just not a deep-dish pizza fancier.)

Okay, that's six. But I still say the Impellizzeri brothers make essentially identical pizzas, but call it a tie. All the other Louisville-style spots - Clifton's, Za's, Jockamo's, Wick's, Sportstime, etc. - are good, but they don't come up to the Impellizzeris.

EDITED: Dang! I forgot Boombozz, which doesn't really fit neatly into any of the styles. I love the quattro stagione (loved it even better when they used to put the ingredients on the four quarters), and I also really like their Neapolitan thin-crust. Knock off Luigi's in favor of BoomBozz, I guess, although I love 'em both.

The preceding citations are much appreciated. The funny thing to me is that after being in this business for 15 years, and eating pizza at work so often, I usually have no interest in eating it elsewhere on those occasions when I get out. I've no idea who does good pie, although in olden times Impellizari's was the choice.

It DOES help to have good beer while eating any pizza.

Steve O's and Fast Break are both very, very good, and I'll have to confess that I probably don't think of them first simply because they're outside my usual orbit.

I'm not sure where I'd rate them, but they certainly fit in near the top of the "Louisville-style" pack, right up there with Clifton's and other favorites. I'm not sure I'd give them the edge over the Impellizzeris, though, in that category, and I wouldn't want to rank them with NYC or Real Italian pies.
