Another rumor about location for Bobby Flay's restaurant!

by Mark R. » Mon Nov 24, 2014 12:46 pm

According to this article: Restaurant Location in inside source has said that Bobby Flay is considering the old Burgers Market location for a restaurant here in Louisville. It's certainly an interesting possibility in choosing it would certainly mean that Bobby is looking to serve the local community instead of aiming for the convention business he would get going downtown.

Interesting in that it was a restaurant space way back ... for many years, the front half of the building housed Myra's, a diner-type neighborhood joint which Bim Deitrich and Tim Barnes turned into Formerly Myra's, later Formally Myra's, back in the late '70s and early '80s, I guess. Burger's was smaller, in the back, and drove the restaurant out when they decided to expand the grocery, an act that made a lot of people down on them for a while. ;)

I imaging putting it back as a restaurant wouldn't be a trivial task, but the move might ring a lot of good chimes.

I'm still not sure how much credibility to put in Bobby, though, and if it does go through, how hands-on he would be. He's got better things to do than hang out in his Louisville property except during racing season when it would make him a local playah. I'm guessing that's what he's really got in mind.

I'd be more excited if Bim brought Myra's back. And their soft shelled crabs!

Insider Louisville is reporting a Hilltop Theater location.

I saw that article this morning too. IL is certainly coming up with a lot of rumors about where Mr. Flay is going to locate in Louisville, if they keep guessing enough they are bound to get it right sooner or later if they keep guessing! While I know that having Mr. Flay open a restaurant in Louisville would give Louisville some great PR I'm really not sure how much it would help our restaurant scene. We all know it would be his restaurant in name only and somebody else would end up being the driving force for day-to-day operations.

It is going to be at the Horseshoe Casino in Southern Indiana. He already has restaurants in other hotel/casinos under the Caesars umbrella.

Not sure if it'll be a new concept or just a new location for an already existing concept, but I am 100% certain on the location through friends of mine that work in Caesars' marketing department. The official announcement will be in the spring while Mr. Flay is in the area attending races at Keeneland.

Not that I don't your word but I certainly hope this rumor isn't true! If this is true it certainly won't add anything to the Louisville dining scene nor to Mr. Flay's reputation. Horseshoe is a place where people go to gamble and eating is only a secondary consideration. Locals are not going to go over there just to have a meal especially when it's one that will in most likelihood just be a Bobby Flay restaurant by name only. Much like the Paula Deen buffet that was over there I'm sure he won't have any direct involvement in the operation of the restaurant, he will just be an advertising figurehead.

This is the restaurant that he is expanding to all Horseshoe Casinos.

Anyone been to the one in the Cincy Horseshoe?

That's certainly a major disappointment! :( :( Certainly not something that will excite anyone in the Louisville dining community nor attract any more business from it to go to Horseshoe!

Science Hill in Shelbyville to become a B&B for BF. Halfway tween Lex and Lou. Perfect for a horse/food guy. $8.8 M will get you there. This is a perfect match. Eight guest rooms with a courtyard that won't quit. Historical Register, great parking, tradition, and a spot known to horsemen. Can you imagine saying that not only did I dine with BF but I slept with him also. Watch this one.

Is a rumor you actually heard or just something you are speculating about?

Actually there has not been any recent talk of Flay's location. The article about Burgers Market was posted back in November. Since then it was purchased by Louisville Collegiate School.

It's fun to speculate, but I don't think there has been any confirmation by Mr. Flay. It will be big news in Louisville. Especially with non-foodies who eat at places based on name. I still think it will pop up downtown somewhere now that constriction has begun on Angels Envy and the Aloft Hotel.

I know big egos come with the chef business, and in many cases this ego is honorably earned through hard work and amazing cuisine.

Some chefs, however, slither past the hard work and go straight for the ego. This is less admirable.

I'm not naming any names, though.

Well, it will probably suffer the same fate as Wolfgang did....

I go back to another post of mine....does Louisville really need this type of hype taking away from our own excellent chefs?

I'm assuming you're referring to the Wolfgang Puck express that was in the convention center? That was as far from being one of his restaurants as anything you can imagine, it was certainly his in name only. Hopefully if Bobby does truly open a restaurant in the Louisville area will have some direct involvement in the design and menu at the very least. I would also expect him to visit it out if somewhat regular basis to ensure that the techniques and quality his expectations. I highly doubt that Wolfgang ever touched foot in the express location.

I don't think locals need a Bobby Flay restaurant but having one would certainly provide more visibility to the Louisville restaurant scene as far as attracting conventions etc. goes. I'm guessing in the long run that's where the majority of patrons for it would come from thus a downtown location makes much more sense for it.

Bobby is starting to look a lot like an (upscale) chain, and I will be amazed if he does anything here other than open another link in one of them. Bobby's Burger Place? That looks like the expanding empire, with 18 locations already, including one in the - get ready for it - Cincinnati Horseshoe casino boat.

I'm sure Bobby will drop in, media in tow, when he's in town for the races. This will give him an even bigger and more visible pulpit on those occasions. But Bobby working the line in the kitchen? Bobby spending more than one minute working on the menu? I think that's pretty unlikely.

We're a very cool city, with a great restaurant scene. It's nice that Bobby Flay loves it here. But I just don't see this as a huge story that justifies frequent speculation. For me, it's filed right next to "Paradise Cafe, Lynn's."
