Just wanted to chime in. I am a competitive distance runner and have read a lot about coffee and tea. A small coffee (8 oz). or less is okay prior to running a race at any distance. Of course most races are in the morning and I grab a coffee when I can. I have read a few studies and articles on this topic. What most say is that black coffee and tea without anything added is mostly made up of water (somewhere around 98%). So neither tea or coffee straight up is extremely bad for you. It's just that some people don't have a taste for either and wind up adding a lot of outside ingredients. Some just don't drink either. I myself love both and take full advantage of not feeling to guilty when drinking them. Of course no cream or sugar added.
