Menu misspellings ...

by Robin Garr » Sat Oct 25, 2014 4:14 pm

I try to avoid doing this in reviews, but if a menu error is hilarious enough ("crap rangoon") sometimes I can't help myself.

How about you? If you notice a menu error, would you inform the management, or let it slide?

I think the answer depends on the situation and the restaurant. Several restaurants where we are "regulars" I'd certainly give the management grief over it. Other restaurants it would depend on the situation and how bad the error was.

This reminds me of how many servers at restaurants mispronounce Tsingtao beer......I can accept that. However, when I order one with the proper pronunciation (ching dow)and the server implicitly corrects me with an incorrect pronunciation, that really burns my *aft end. . Interestingly enough, the mispronunciation of this Chinese beer mostly happens in Thai/Vietnamese or fusion restaurants.

*sorry about the visual

I'm not going to mention names, but on a (now closed) local fine dining establishment several years ago I noticed on their menu: "grilled beef tornados" (as opposed to tournedos, aka filet/tenderloin)

I joked about it being "a whirlwind of flavor".

There were other numerous spellcheck issues that honestly I could tell happened because of spellcheck autocorrecting things. Not exactly the restaurants fault... They obviously took effort. Just funny to me. Which is why it's handy to add French or Italian dictionary's to your spellcheck in your word processing program.

...and always re-read and have at least one other person double check the proof, before you goto press. Writers law... Eh, Robin?

This is not a mis spelling as such, but when we had our restaurant in Crete, we attempted to write the menu ourselves including the greek translation. Our produce supplier took great delight in informing us that our translation of BBQ Ribs read Barbecued children!!!!

That would be dictionaries, not dictionary's. There is a local restaurant that adds apostrophes to several plurals. Two for one Martini's, today's omelette's, etc. drives me crazy, but I am anal. Have an English teacher check your menu !

I am a bad speller. I admit it. But I know how to use "spell check".

Wasn't there a Louisville restaurant back in the day called Wangs & Thangs?

Yep! South side of Oak between Garvin and Fourth, IIRC.
