Fun poll question

by Rob S » Wed Oct 15, 2014 5:02 pm

I've been kicking around a restaurant idea myself for a while. What holds me back is no experience in this game. While discussing my idea with my wife one night, she mentioned she thought a good idea for a restaurant would be one whose menu honors Louisville's rich restaurant past by being comprised of items from closed restaurants. While I'll leave that idea for someone else, it does beg the question - if such a place existed, what dishes would you want to see represented? For me, the spicy tuna rolls from Sachicoma, the chicken wings from Butchertown Pub, and the fried chicken from John E's would have to be there. What say you, fellow forum members? I'm sure I'll think of more in a bit.

Great question!

Right off the bat, I'm thinking about Chef Mike Hungerford's lobster roll at the little seafood lunch counter that was inside the seafood store in Chenoweth Square for a while.

The wood-fired pizzas at Allo Spiedo, later Primo, now gone. :(

I know I'll think of lots more after I post this. I'll put a link to it from the HotBytes Facebook page, too.

A quick response on Facebook: "Third Avenue Cafe's Fish Sandwich on Homemade Marbled Bread."

(Their marbled rye looked like grocery-bought to me, but I do miss that eatery.)

Another Facebook reply: "La Paloma minestrone, goat cheese appetizer, and the roasted chicken."

I like it. How about:

-- Pasquales' Stromboli sandwich. It was a long roll with a beef patty that had grooves in it. It had a gravy sauce and came with pickles. My dad used to bring it home late at night from work, and I'd be up doing homework. Imagine if some Italians decided to make their own homemade version of the McRib, but make it with beef. That's the closest I can get to describing it.

More:

"The stuffed pizza from Windy City."

"I'd like to find a replacement for the fish sandwich on rye from Teek's."

I wish those Facebookers would just click through via Facebook login!

Meanwhile,

"Lentini's Chicken Noodle soup. I haven't found anything like it and miss that almost as much as the rest of the meal."

When I was a kid we used to go to this place on Taylorsville Road close to the Bardstown Road intersection, called I think, "The Hickory House." I LOVED their big frankfurter/hotdog.

I also miss Lentini's bread, and their chocolate mousse cake dessert.

Ray Parella's garlic bread. La Normandie's fried chicken. Mama Grasanti's garlic bread and lasagna.

For starters, the War Su Gai from Ho Kow is the absolute tops of my list. All efforts to recreate this dish and every other version I've tried pale in comparison.
Eating a fish sandwich at the old Cunningham's on 6th St.
Also, pretty much anything from Social 732.

The Facebook discussions are blowing up to the point that it's hard to keep copying and pasting replies over here. If you'd like to follow them, too, here's a link to the thread on the HotBytes page:

Alameda Bar & Grill - appetizer platter & huevos rancheros, maybe Santa Fe pizza.
Blue Hawaii - pupu platter, though might not taste the same unless the place is, as the C-J critic declared, “decorated by Tarzan on an acid trip”.
Brasserie Dietrich - steak au poivre.
Butchertown Pub - chili (Thai & Indian places, at least around here, have nothing on this dish for heat).
Champion BBQ - addictive dry ribs, rare style around here it seems.
Fat Cat's Deli & Pub - best gaucamole I ever had.
Fresher Cooker - Benedictine sandwich with alfalfa sprouts.
Garrett's Steak House - best baked potatoes I ever had.
Lotus - War sue gai & their amazing hearty eggrolls with chunky sweet & sour sauce from the 'ketchup' squeeze bottles.
Lynn's Paradise Cafe - pecan crusted chicken in bourbon cream sauce.
Masterson's - Greek spaghetti
Nermana's - chicken goulash
Pigasus - various BBQ
Ray Parrella's - HOT bruschetta I didn't have to scrape tomatoes off of.
Tedesco's - spaghetti & meatballs
Thatsa Wrapp - not sure if originated locally, but the Asian Crunch wrap dug grooves in my brain.
Tumbleweed's - while they're still around they long ago abandonded a menu anybody cares about, so I vote for the open faced Tex-Mex chiliburger.
