Well, it certainly wasn't serious competition.

Good luck, Steve Hacker. You really dropped the ball at Eater Louisville and I hope you learned something from the ordeal. The immature pot shots were bound to catch up to you sooner or later. No serious foodie would follow your site for long in spite of a decent post here and there. Come join the foodie community and put your talents to good use. I'd gladly give you a second chance.

My theory is they ran out of quotation marks. Probably used double apostrophes for a while forestalling the end but eventually exhausted those as well. That's the danger when half the content is fair-use quotes from other sources.

Certainly not in the sense of quality content, Mark. But sure, Eater National certainly built their business model on moving into cities on the cheap, paying a minimum wage to hungry free-lancers, using high-powered, if sleazy, search-engine optimization, and then hoping the advertising money would roll in. Clearly that model didn't work, but sure, they hoped to take over the market.

I'd have to think long and hard about whether Wee Willie Whacker or his predecessor, Snide Kid, would have anything to add to the forum, James. I try to be open and affirming, but they sure burned a lot of bridges, and the sad thing is that I know what they were paid. They sold themselves very cheaply.

I hear ya, Robin. And you were the main target of such behaviour. I just think that coming clean with a somewhat mea culpa, then perhaps emerging later in the future in whatever format, sounds fair. After all, the damage is done. Anyone can see their work when they interview for more serious jobs. Coming clean would be a good start on the road to rectification.
