New Life for old Baxter Station?

by Robin Garr » Sat Sep 13, 2014 3:40 pm

Fox 41 (Chris Otts, a former CJ reporter and a good guy) is reporting on a plan to reopen Baxter Station as a bar and eatery. I’m trying to figure out how this relates to a July HotBytes discussion:
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=22132

Anyway, here’s the top of the story, with a link to the rest:

The building that formerly housed Baxter Station Bar and Grill is set to become a neighborhood bar and restaurant again.

Real estate investor Fred Pizzonia, 50, hopes to open unnamed restaurant as soon as mid-October following a renovation of the space at 1201 Payne Street in Louisville’s Irish Hill neighborhood.

Pizzonia, who also owns Rockford Automotive, said he and a business partner bought the former Baxter Station building in foreclosure last month.

Records from the Jefferson County Master Commissioner’s office show Jesse E. Francis bought the building for $158,000 on July 8 after Stock Yards Bank filed suit against the former owner, Andrew Hutto.

The state ordered Baxter Station to close last year for nonpayment of taxes ...

Matt, the WDRB post read like news, so I wondered if it was a different operation than we were talking about back in July. Glad to hear something is going in there, regardless!

Because it's a day for reviving old threads: Today I noticed they're tearing the facade off the old Baxter Station building. Anybody know anything about it? I'm guessing the plans announced nearly two years ago are defunct.

An email correspondent tells me, "Its the same operation and concept they talked about last year just slow w permits."

I have no reason to doubt my source, but this sounds bizarre, unless it's a case of an inspector who wants a "tip" and an owner who declines to take the hint.

No idea if this is correct or not, but this very subject was just posted about on the NextDoor app for our area a couple of days ago. Someone on there said that it is going to be called Ciao, an Italian restaurant, and operated by the folks who own Luigi's downtown?!?!

I went to Baxter Station almost weekly for 14 years. Gonna be hard to replace it. I wish them well though.

Heather noted about the new name. There are now "Caio" logos on the sides of the building, with updated paint trim, as well as on the front door. The windows still have paper on them but I see activity from time to time when going by on Payne Street. Has anyone heard anything more?

Has there or isn't there a Caio restaurant or cafe in town?

Please tell me the logos say "Ciao" and not "Caio".

Yerp, I saw that this morning. It's definitely "Ciao," too, although it's in a cursive design that's kind of hard to make out.
