We've eaten at several wine or beer dinners here in Louisville, for which the restaurant has taken a credit card and told us the penalty for no-shows. I have no problem with this, as (especially for such a "special occasion" dinner) they often cannot afford to have an empty table.

I just would want restaurants to be like the one place that charged on a case-by-case basis; unfortunately, we've been in situations lately where one or more of a large party could not attend due to illness, and there was nothing anyone could have done (we did call the restaurant, but at least once I know they did not have time to call a wait list).
