Crazy offline idea ... caroling at a few forum fave eateries

by Robin Garr » Sun Dec 16, 2007 6:02 pm

Just throwing this wacky concept out there because it just now occurred to me:

What if a good-size group of us were to get together and go caroling? And ... wait for it ... we would carol at several of the restaurants where forumites are on duty, stopping at each for just a little plate or drink or bocadito?

Fun? Or too embarrassing to sing, or not enough time to set it up, or just too much trouble?

Anyone interested in the idea or a variant thereof?

I think it sounds like fun - sort of like our Latin Throwdown run awhile back. Are we going to warn the establishments - so they can stock earplugs?

Got a date in mind?

No, it was just a thought. You can tell I haven't been partaking of Magyar Meth because I can still spell.

Warnings would be mandatory, and permission, lest security be called.

No, no date, and now that I look at this week's calendar, there actually aren't many open nights for me.

It just seemed like fun when I thought about it ...

Well it does sound ridiculously fun. It would have to be a big enough crowd, I think, for me to feel comfortable (even though I was a music performance major about a million years ago, not voice, I hate my singing voice). My husband has been dying to do something like it, even though the man's never expressed any notion like it for as long as I've known him. And of course by the time the evening was over, I'm thinking we'd all be fairly glowing, what with the requisite boozing and all.

What a hoot it would be.

On the first day of Christmas, My true love gave to me!!!!....

Even on paper, this SOUNDS like a bad idea...

Although I do find myself singing to myself alot this time of year, It's probably better kept that way!....

Actually....

Let's think about this for a second (and I haven't been into the Polish vodka, so let's clear that up right away!)

It is probably too late to do this year, but Robin, you SHOULD file this away to talk about in November next year and potentially organize a group. But, let me throw another idea in for size.

- We plan one night, find those of us with decent voices and select easy to handle carols (really, how badly can you butcher "Jingle Bells"?), and pick a couple restaurants to spread holiday cheer...BUT we ALSO, pick up food from those restaurants and add to our route a soup kitchen, Gilda's Club, the Ronald McDonald house or a local nursing home or two. We serve up special food AND holiday cheer at the same time....and those are audiences that will be happy to join in and probably won't care if we are out of tune!

Waddaya think? Can we put it in the "tickler" file for next year?

Oh my god, Melissa! That is an awesome idea. I love it. I can't do that this year, but if it gets planned for next year then I am totally in!

Excellent! And start planning it around the first of November. I've put it in Google Calendar. Right next to my private stash of Hungarian brandy ...

Thanks, Melissa!

If I was eating dinner in a nice restaurant and a bunch of carolers walked in and started singing, there would likely be bloodshed. I feel pretty much the same way about mariachi bands, loud muzak and overly enthusiastic pianists. I don't mind a little background music, but the focus of a meal should be the food and the company you are dining with. I hate having to strain to hear or be heard at dinner.
