More on smart phones and dining out

by Robin Garr » Wed Jul 16, 2014 10:26 am

This is a more serious inquiry into smartphone use while dining out than the clickbait hoax that went around last week. It still has an agenda-driven feel, though. Your thoughts?

My favorite statement from this article:

..."His smartphone use approached the pathological"...

So who these days doesn't know this person ?

I was at a family gathering Sunday. At one point five of us were in one room and four were doing stuff on their phones. I was the only one not, probably only because I don't have a phone to check. None of these were kids or teenagers, all adults.

? Why not? At the very least anybody who's considerate should put their phone on vibrate when they are in a public place such as a restaurant and they should excuse himself to take the call if it's extremely important. I don't believe that many calls are that important that they can't wait until after you finish your meal however! Since so many users have forgotten what common courtesy is I really think that restaurants and other such places are going to have to start stepping in and enforcing some rules.

You are way behind the times. No one uses phones to talk anymore.

You laugh, but of course that's the point. If it were just a matter of making phone calls, it would be much easier to put them away. This is more like giving a person a pill to make them smarter, but then tell them that they have to take an antidote before entering the room. Only those who don't understand, or care about, the brain-enhancing power of a palm-size computer still think of them as "phones."

Brain enhancing  ..........More like brain numbing. Then again now that I own such a palm sized computer, I suppose I could spend that 15 minutes I'm waiting at the doctors office becoming an expert on Objectivism and Ayn Rand. 8)....That and learn the proper use of the apostrophe.

Thats the thing, I see why phone calls are annoying. Go outside to take your call. But why does anyone care if the people at the other table are enjoying their phones instead of each other?

Now, if the only person not using a phone at your table is you, I think we have diagnosed who isnt entertaining enough.

I can remember eating out and if a diner was called away for a phone call you could assume he / she was a doctor.

Have you seen a modern smartphone? It is the center of my world. It is attached to my hand. Hell I may soon have it on a watch, or implanted in my skull. When you ban them, someone will allow them, and your restaurant will close. Again, please just don't ban them. It's for the future of humanity. I promise I won't use it to make a phone call, I will be too busy tweeting photos of my meal, by the power of thought to answer if you call.

Where is the cyborg emoticon?
