Senor Taco closed?

by Richard S. » Tue Jul 08, 2014 2:50 pm

It looks like the Senor Taco on Bardstown near Watterson Trail has closed. My wife and I ate there once; it was pretty good but probably suffered from a combination of a cursed location and an abundance of Mexican options in that area. A Cuban bakery in that spot only lasted a few months; it was shuttered for years after the coffee shop closed.

In other Fern Creek-area news, the site under construction across from Kroger will be a Raisin' Canes, or so says the banner on the fence. Not the Panera we were hoping for but better than a bank or a drugstore.

Isn't that the place that sells nothing but all manner of chicken fingers and basically nothing else?

Pretty much; chicken fingers and Texas toast. They're based in Baton Rouge and were very big in Louisiana when I lived there, although I may have only tried them once or twice. I did have a friend who claimed their food was the best he ever tasted. I see they're building one in Valley Station as well. Someone must have acquired the Louisville franchise rights so we are likely to see several pop up in the next year or so.

Yes, there is already one on Westport Road near Hurstbourne ... I pass by it fairly often, but haven't checked it out.

This will present tough choices for those who will have to decide whether to get their chicken fingers from Raisin' Canes, Chick fil a, KFC, Arby's, Dairy Queen, etc. To rephrase--what a bummer!

Actually, I knew about this about 2 wks ago when I saw the sign of the developer and decided to call. Once I established that I wasn't a reporter she let me in on the big news. She seemed perplexed when I sighed from disappointment thinking that we should be thrilled that such a fine establishment was integrating the hood. I could sense her true perplexity as I proceeded to give her a tutorial over the phone.

We tried it once, and that was it! The chicken was somewhat greasy and there was no crispiness to the coating. The toast was okay but also somewhat soggy and the fries were nothing to write home about! The chicken fingers at almost every other place in town such as Zaxby's, Chick-fil-A, Dairy Queen, etc. are much better IMHO. The crowds at Westport Road location are not even close to the size they were when the location opened.

My experience exactly. I kept wondering what the big deal was. Same, bland, bleached beyond recognition, white meat fingers. Meh.
I think a great advertising campaign for them would be-

Gonna go against the grain here....we are addicted to Canes. Recently relocated from Taylorsville to the Bardstown Rd/Watterson Trail area. We saw the Canes sign and couldn't believe our luck. Granted, it's not err-bodies cup o tea, but we love it! They only do chicken strips, but when they come out, very hot and salted, it hits our sweet spot. I even might take a huge load (25/50) to our UL Football tailgating.

There ya go! 8) One of the things I love about this forum is the possibility of contrasting opinions. No lockstep thinking here!

I'm with Tony. I am not a chicken tenders person, but the two times I tasted my son's order they were very tasty. Ours were perfectly fried & crispy, with nice juicy white meat. I was impressed ( but the menu is too limited for me to go there) .

There's also a chicken tender-based food truck that's apparently opened, called Pollo. It does what looks like wings and tenders-based food items (like a chopped chicken tender po' boy that was actually pretty good, with nice bread, a good raisin slaw, tender if slightly dry chicken with good breading, and a great spicy sauce that I could've had more of). Just in case you needed your chicken from a thing on wheels.

Places like these popping up are no surprise to me considering there is a whole generation of kids raised on eating nothing but chicken fingers.......

Raisin' Canes has never been the same since they changed their signature "Cane's" sauce about 5 years ago. It used to be zesty, but is now rather bland.

That said, when you pigeon-hole yourself into doing only chicken fingers and nothing else, you'd better do them better than anyone. Cane's does a pretty good job, but I just don't eat as many chicken fingers as I once did...
